We need new kitceh pipes, and the new set-up won't allow for a countertop filter (We'd been using Puritech). Since we have to buy a new one anyone, I want one that filters out the pharmeceuticals. A few things I've read say only reverse osmosis can do that, but I feel uncomfortable about the waste of water . (And can someone explain to me in simple language why it wastes 3-5 gallons of water for each gallon it cleans. How does it use so much water to clean the water?) . An environmentalist wrote not to use ro but to use a filter with coconut shells, but he didn't name any brands. PUR uses coconut shells and claims to get out pharmeceuticals, but they only make a counter top model and I need under the sink. The EWG doesn't test for pharmeceuticals yet. DOes anyone know of a non - ro , under the sink filter that uses the coconut shells and gets out pharmeceuticals? I may take drugs when the new TX are approved, but I certainly don't want extras! And my kids don't need antidepressants, heart meds, or hormones.

I use aquasana in the shower. I have a whole house water softener with RO under the sink, and yes, the membrane that lasts for 5 year has to be constantly washed to allow it to stay good for 5 years, so it uses a lot of water to do that. I used to think it was wasting the water, like you said. Now I realize that it all recycles back to the clouds and into rain again, so it's not wasting it, per se, it's really using it. You're just not drinking it. We use the RO water, but since RO doesn't remove fluoride, and our county decided to poison our water with fluoride several years ago, after we bought the RO system, we also buy distilled water locally and add liquid minerals to it, as it's not good to drink distilled water all the time, it will leach minerals from the body, unless you add minerals back into it. It is useful to remove heavy metals and drinking distilled water plain for a week or so once a year is an option. I use these minerals, I got them for $15 at Natural healthy Concepts but they have raised the price to $20 now. :-(

Thanks for the responses and for explaining. Still not sure what to buy...Leaning toward ro though.
