I know that none of these feelings are good for my health but that's what I'm feeling. Thanks to some dirty politics in my town, this supposedly green community will be polluted (at the taxpayers' expense). And lots of parents voted for this! Their excuse was "I don't like the environmental impact either, but it's so good for athletics". Since when did sports become more important than the environment, more important than academics? (since this is money we won't have to rehire teachers and ta's we had to let go) No, don't answer that. After Penn State nothing about America's obsession with sports should surprise me. I work so hard to control what I put in my body to try and be as healthy as possible, and to do the same for my children. But there's no way to protect them from this. On top of it, I'll have to stop using my garden. We don't get a lot of food, but it's beautiful to pick herbs for dinner, and to eat the produce we do get. Now the toxic runoff will be washing right through my garden unless we can find a way to re-route it without just sending it to our neighbors. This sucks!!!! Thanks for listening to me vent. I liked living here a lot more when I didn't pay attention to these things. (Like several people I spoke to who had no idea there was even a vote!) But because of my kids, I feel like I have to be aware.
Long story involving a corrupt school board. Moving funds from education and into the construction of toxic turf fields (on top of a hill no less) cutting all the trees that would have somewhat contained the runoff. Our town voted against it, but the next town over got to vote, too because they're in our district. It's not polluting them, and now we're going to have a bunch of new giant stadiums because one board member was upset that his daughter got muddy when she played on grass fields. They found a few flawed studies to say the turf is safe. Arghhhhhhhhhhh.
Perhaps present an argument to press for eco planning - since its already approved. They may be able to alter design to prevent direct negative impact?
Important thing, you've vented a little here about the stressor, and you know that is good for you!
yes, Shadow, it does seem that the gap between the evolutionary status of humans is getting a wider gap.
Brigid, It would seem to me that if you could find others who agree with you, and you get together and devise some kind of plan and present it with positive energy, it would stand the best chance of being heard and even accepted. You can get your frustrations out in the group so that when you approach the powers that be, you come on like their best friend. Hoping for the best here!
Thanks for the support, guys. Some of us are trying to push for a greener plan, but so many are weary or indifferent -- it's hard to get the numbers we need. It amazes me that people don't get that we need to take care of the planet. But my duaghter and I went around picking up garbage today, so that felt good. Always lots of candy wrappers after Halloween.
I agree with you, Shadow. We need to vent our fears & frustrations to hear how they sound, maybe get some answers & support, and squarely face reality. I think we can do all that & still, overall, be positive. Hope keeps us going forward.
One of the nicest things we can offer someone is hope.
Brigid, you make me smile! Love your passion & drive. What a great legacy you are sharing with your children. you must be a cool mom.
Glad you have not given up the cause. Your efforts alone are making an important impact.
Could everyone please send positive vibes that the people in power will at least agree to the "greener" turf that we're asking for. It's more expensive, so they're fighting it. Thanks.
THanks for the support. I hope I'm a cool mom. I get so discouraged sometimes. I live in a small town, and when I run into the "pro-turf" moms, I feel bitter and hard inside. Even my daughter came home and said, "The gym teacher says it's a really good thing. It will make our school better and look better. " She said she would have voted for it! (Of course, she's ten and would vote for anything I'm against.)
What happened?
