Housemate/Roommate Tension

I would love to hear anyone's stories about roommate/housemate anxiety and how they dealt with it. I'm going through alot of anxiety right now over my living situation. My current roommate is a self-professed total slob. I jumped into this situation very quickly because I needed to find somewhere to live fast and it was an easy temporary sublet through an old friend. I can not wait to leave. When I got here the stove was covered in sticky grim. it took nearly an hour to scrub it clean. The tub was similar with a nasty grey tinge. It took alot of hard work and scrubbing to finally make the space feel comfortable but it still doesn't feel quite right.
I was approached by another dear friend who wanted to be my housemate and move in with me. He said he was clean. We looked at several two bedroom apartments together. I was really excited to live with him. A few days ago I mentioned that we should have a weekly cleaning chart for when we move in together. Two things went horribly wrong. He didn't even like the idea of a cleaning chart and also didn't believe the common areas needed to be cleaned every week. I felt like vomiting. I was so disgusted I needed to go take a shower right away.
Even though I felt horrible for "dumping" a friend, I just had to tell him I couldn't live with him. I hate myself so much for disappointing him but I'm desperately in need of my own space, especially after living with my current dirty housemate. I can't live like this anymore even though I can barely afford a studio apartment in this city.
Has anyone here dealt with housemates like this? Or ones that understand? I had one housemate who respected my need for cleanliness and I'll miss her forever.

Your roommate sounds very inconsiderate. If the mess is bothering you, she should have the decency to clean up after herself. I wish i had an answer for you. My husband and kids are like this. They make messes and expect me to clean them all up. Some of the things they do are very inconsiderate, like letting the garbage pile up and fall through the side of the bag without bothering to take it out themselves . It really makes me feel like i am being taken for granted when they do that, and i think they should realize that the cleanup is going to be bad and stop it before it gets to be a big job .

I feel the same way with my family. They are not obsessed with being clean. Sometimes they will touch things I consider dirty (the dogs, the trash, blow their nose, etc) and not feel the need to wash their hands. It really stresses me out.
