I have two big rose bushes, they've been here for many years. This year, winter has been too brutal on them. Most have brown stems that won't grow roses and some green stems that do.
I want to know what do I do with the brown stems? Cut it off or just cut it really short and then maybe they will grow again?

with other plants and shrubs, etc I cut the dead wood off near the bottom of the stem but not flush with the adjoining stem. I leave a short bit. An inch maybe. Depends on the size of the plant. I think it prevents disease setting in if you leave a little bit of stem.
