I'm 63 and have been a serious gardener since I was 18. Really started as a child with marigolds in milk cartons in kindergarden.Gardening relieves so much stress. Yes it is physical which is a good thing. Gets us moving. When I worked, i came home from a high stress production job. Sometimes it was hard to drive home as I was so stressed. I would throw on some shorts and go straight to the garden. I can honestly say that within 15 minutes I felt a difference. You become so involved with watering, trimming, tying plants up, fertilizing and other good stuff that you don't have time to think of your problems. And the rewards when you look back are unbelievable. i encourage everyone to give gardening a try. It can be small and simple but will give you many rewardes.
I love to garden but I gave it up when I had back to back accidents 8 years ago. I have a nice balcony now partially overlooking the lake and would like to do some container gardening. I have all my hanging baskets in the outdoor closet and a couple big containers filled with good soil. The problem is I'm on the 3rd floor and getting plants, flowers. Up the stairs is hard for me.
I would love to learn how to do good container gardening and have an herb garden inside the house( too hot on Texas summer for outside).
The cheaper the better for any advice l. I still have all my plant and flower food and tools from my house when we had extensive flowers and plants. I'm hoping this group will motivate me!
There are seed catalogs that will deliver to your door. Look up Park Seed, Gurneys and other seed companies. They sell live plants too. See what is appropriate for you garden zone which I'm sure is hot, One plant that comes to mind is brugmansia. It is a tree. Don't panic though. They are very small when you purchase them. They are usually 6 to 12 inches tall. You put them in a pot and they grow taller every year. If you get a frost, you would have to pull the pot inside. It will continue to grow in a sunny window. Otherwise it could stay on the patio/deck. They are all over San Francisco. They get gorgeous long bell shaped flowers that emit a heavenly fragrance in the evening. They perfume the air. They are easy to take care of and love water. they come in white, pinks, yellow, and some reds. Here in Milwaukee Wi I have 4 which I must put in the basement in October. They are worth it though. Good luck and have fun!
That's what I'm trying to get others to realize.
You can grow Herbs, vegetables to eat and help with anxiety and depression.
But the actual Gardening can make you feel good too.
