Just wondering if anyone out there has a job in the IT industry directly influenced by computer games? I'll elaborate on this question by relating my relevant experience.
In about 1992 I received my first PC. It was a Packard Bell 386 SX 25MHz system, with about (if I recall correctly 1 MB of memory) and a 20 MB hdd. This was actually a halfway decent system at the time running Windows 3.1 (or was it 3.0). I remember when I was at the store checking out the system that I thought I could get lost in the many windows and not be able to find the programs I needed...hah
Before long, I realized that there was no sound from the PC during games. There were only the occasional series of beeps from the PC speaker. I asked a more experienced friend what the heck was going on and learned about the soundblaster sound card... I expressed to my parents why I desperately needed one of these!
Eventually games like Aces over the Pacific came out and I was unable to get them to work. It seemed 1 MB of memory just wasn't going to do it any more. I ended up swapping my monitor to a friend for a total of 4 MB of memory (a great trade for me!). Even after that I had to learn to configure the dreaded autoexec.bat and config.sys to free up as much memory as possible.
I learned so much from those days that getting a job on a computer help desk was a breeze and eventually was promoted enough time to have a good career. College provided a good education, but computers provided me with a darn good career. I look back to those days and thank God for computer games!

in brief:
got a Commodore 64 when i was 8, played with a VERY rudimentary paint package.
moved on to Amiga and spent vast amounts of time using Deluxe Paint, making pictures and animations. Also OctoMED for making daft music.
took Art and IT for my options at school
eventually moved to a PC, learnt to use 3d Studio Max.
now an animator for a video games company :)
