I am from St. Louis MO and we were the inventors of Gooey Butter Cake....it was a baker making a mistake that made it and damn that stuff is so good.....sweet tooth beware.....

Bill I've never heard of Gooey Butter Cake but it does sound sinful. YUM and I did hear of toasted ravioli but have not tried them either. I'd be game for both.

I've come from Cork and our favorite food would be coming by the glass as "DarK" (Guinness). Everything else involves a potato or cabbage.

There's Colcannon---potato and cabbage.

There's Coddle---mostly leavings of whatever you didn't eat before which is no sure invitation to how it tastes, but it can have potato and onion, maybe bits of cabbage, and respectable and not so respectable bits of animal as adding in rashers (bacons) or sausages sometimes with suspicious animal contents or animal parts we don't speak of directly in polite society.

There's Boxty---a potato and flour, buttermilk, soda and sometimes egg pancake.

Where I am now in Oregon there are all sorts of fine drinkables---Bouy Beer, and all manner of micro brews. I like the local cold coffee with no alcohol but plenty of life killing sugar.

I've tried crab cakes and they are as good as in Ireland but I do miss the potato mixed in there.

If you're adventurous you can on occasion here sample some piece of mostly the neck of a huge clam called a "geoduck" (pronounced "gooey duck" (not to be confused with the "Gooey" in Gooey Butter Cake). The neck is such a powerful piece of muscle that it is mostly ground up to add to clam stew or chowder. The neck looks like, oh my,..
every other geoduck neck, thouigh some would claim to be longer than others.

I also live in PA, but more specifically I live in Philly. Here we are known for having some of the best cheesesteak sandwiches along with all the other things,that Veggiequeen mentioned. We also are known for a Rita’s water ice which is extremely yummy and their gelato’s which is half water ice and half custard. And let’s not forget Taylor pork roll, I don’t think you could get that everywhere but I’m not positive.

I believe corned beef and cabbage is a big thing many have had for St. Patty's Day. I have a question though. For most the corned beef comes in a tin and is sliced up and added to the cabbage and potatoes. When I worked in the deli, there was also sliced jewish corned beef. I'm wondering what the actual tradition is to be?

PS. Me not being a big fan of either I'd be just as happy with some cabbage and noodles. yum

Jean, Not being from Philly I didn't dare mention cheesesteak . I do love them too but was told several years ago that mine would NOT compare to those in Philly. lol
