Depends on what the facial reaction would be? I think people should be completely informed and then have the option to decide for themselves. Pain can be a powerful motivator.

yes, although 1% is a huge number like dreamsicle as long as those offered the cure were fully aware of the potential lethal side effect i'd go for it - arthritis not only causes horrible pain but also disability and robs people of their quality of life

I agree with you Dream, and I got to wondering why there ISN'T any precident for this. Could your slip of the eye be part of the answer? People remember very little of what doctors say to them, & add to that the one's for whom English is a challenge I guess families would be saying their loved ones had not understood that they could die from it??
I do think those of us with chronic pain are far more willing to risk those odds than is the average family member!

Well, technically every drug on the market could cause a fatal reaction for anyone at any time. Sometimes that fatal reaction is because it has a bad interaction with something else you took as well and sometimes it's because the body has an allergic reaction to the product. I'm not sure whether the FDA would approve a drug knowing it's going to definitely kill 1% of the users, but if it's a 1% chance you could have a reaction but not guaranteed for anyone, then they would consider those good odds and allow it on the market. I don't know if I would want to be given a drug that is guaranteed to kill 1% of people who take it (if such a guarantee could be made) because I would fear that I would be a part of the 1% and I don't know if I want to play Russian roulette and just hope the bullet isn't aimed at me. But heck, if the public is warned that use of the medication could result in death, they can still choose whether to take it or not, so I guess it's fine in that respect.

too bad this question didn't come up last night i'd have asked the doc at work, he might know why there is no precedent for this, or do we know that for a fact? i imagine there have been meds with this level of lethality, other than those prescribed for terminally ill patients. it's an interesting hypothetical ethical issue and i'm sure one that has been discussed by medical ethicists.

the resilience of the human spirit never ceases to awe me, i see people overcome so many challenges here and at work that it's amazing. but i wish that there was more that could be done for chronic disease of all kinds because they rob people of the quality of their life and rob those who care for them of the person as well. that is can be as bad as the disease process, so i can understand how many would take the 1% risk without hesitation. i know i would.

Personally,I would not even hesitate to take the med. 1% IMO is nothing. Have you ever watched on tv those ads put out by various attorney firms? "Have you experienced,then it gives symptoms and then ends with death. Call us at 1-800- - - - . . Every drug out there is loaded with side effects that can be damaging at the least. That is why a good Dr. checks to see your med. list and makes sure that everything that you take will get along with all that you are taking. There are many drugs that do not mix well and if taken improperly can cause death. Pain pills is the main culprit. Especially in the elderly. The younger set or addicted ones will take too many and cause their own death. But truth of the matter is all meds if taken properly and you stay with one Dr. then you can be safely maintained. I have been told about this pain pill or another that you can experience a thing called euthoria. But if you have severe pain this never happens. It quiets your pain so that you can function. So many years back a law was enacted that when you get your meds. the pharmacy MUST give you these papers that have a full description of the med. It also describes what meds. do not do well with the drug you are receiving. These papers must be read. by us. The patient. Just in case your Dr. has indeed slipped up. I saw this drug advertized on tv by one of these attorney firms. Well I had been taking it for years for my diabetes. The atty. firm was saying the same lines and that it could cause death. So when at my nexr Dt. appt. she just described to me what I have tried to write here. any drugs if taken improperly are potential killers. But if you are told"take one a day for diabetes control" why would you ever take say 20 at a time? Have you ever thought about the % of rodent material that the fed. government says is ok to have in processed meats? It is over 1%. I still buy it occasionally as I just gotta have my boloney sandwich sometimes.
