For at least 15 minutes after the Denver Broncos' upset win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Sports Authority Field at Mile High rocked with cheers, and high-fives were as de rigueur as wearing orange.
"Te-bow! Te-bow! Te-bow!" they chanted to honor their leader, Tim Tebow.
"I can't believe it. I can't believe it," said Emma Vasquez, who grabbed a reporter by both arms. "Nobody believed Tim could do it. I believed! I believed!"
Steelers fans were disappointed but mostly gracious.
"They deserved it," said Juan Adams, dressed in a Steelers jersey. "We didn't get beat by a better team. We got beat by a team that wanted it more."
Denver secured at least a break- even season, no matter next week's
outcome. The Broncos advanced their record to 9-8 with the AFC wild-card playoff win.
This has been a remarkable season in many regards. Some suspected the Broncos might lose so many games they would be in the running to draft the projected No. 1 pick, Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
After the win over Pittsburgh, it seems a distant memory to some that Tebow's job appeared to be in jeopardy just a few hours before.
"How can you take it away from him?" said Andrea Lord. "If you want a winner, Tim Tebow is a winner."
The Broncos travel next weekend to take on top-seeded New England, which beat the Broncos two weeks ago, 41-23.
"It's the playoffs, baby — anything can happen," said Andy Worth, who witnessed the Patriots' earlier rout at Mile High. "It's a whole new season."
Lamar Brady said beating the Steelers was sweet but that there's a sweeter dish at hand.
"Revenge is a dish best served cold," he waxed philosophically. "I hope its freezing in New England, and I hope their new offensive coordinator (former Broncos head coach Josh McDaniels) has a front-row seat."
y'all know I was rooting for Denver cause I have a crush on Tebow.. LOL ( okay, I know he's too young for me.) and I listened to all of the commentators ......... no one gave Tebow a snowball's chance in hell ... but he played awesome....... they probably are WON and done... but he quited those critics for that one game. I'm sure if the Steelers were healthy it probably would've been a different outcome.....
but....... it was an exciting game.......
