So my husband and I have had several issues with his younger sister. She is an alcoholic, married to an alcoholic cocaine user. We try to keep our distance because we have 2 small children. We had a huge blow up with her, my brother in law (also an alcoholic as well as his girlfriend) and my mother in law (a huge enabler). We have tried to repair the relationship with my sister in law as farbas letting her see our children only if she is not drinking and not hung over to the point of reeking of stale alcohol. The problem is, I feel like she is making very little effort on her end to change her behaviour or work toward a better relationship. One of the issues with her before was her flaking on us regularly. Every visit had to be when was convienient for her, which was often not convienient for us with a child under 2. She would then get angry and blame me for "not letting her see" our son because I would say no often to the times she would suggest. (Keep in mind most of the times I offered in counter to her wete not convienient for her as she was partying, drinking, travelling etc.) Now her game seems to be texting me asking to visit, then not responding for weeks or at all to my text replies. When she does respond it is "oh i didnt see this message" or "oops i thought I replied to this message". Im 35 yrs old and quite frankly not into playing these childish games. BUT I feel guilty. I feel responsible, and I feel set up by her. I feel set up for her to turn around and yet again blame me for her selfishness. I dont know how much I am supposed to put into these kinds of relationships. I dont feel my kids benefit from a relstionship with her as she is unhealthy and they don't even know her. They have other people in their lives that frankly are better people for them to know, but I still feel bad. I dont know what to do. I feel like just walking away and saying Ive tried and Im done. Am I wrong?
Establish boundaries, maintain the boundaries and to hell with her. Don't be party to her passive-aggressive manipulation. If this continues to be difficult for you, I would suggest counseling to determine why you feel compelled to continue with the unhealthy relationship.
