my Grandmother has alzheimers/dementia. she is here now for the afternnon. but lives in a really nice care home now. I am 27 and my grandfather died recently so my dad n i and mother have been looking after grandma since (now in a home) it has all come at a very difficult time after i movede following an abusive relationship. I have a son 2yrs and have been going through a court case to add to the strain on the family. I am here to learn a bit more about alzheimers if anyone can help so i can support my dad a bit more and know how to deal with my grandma better as she can be dificult and confused and upset but also repetative and not eat etc.

i work in a dementia unit and i can tell you one of the best things is REDIRECT, REDIRECT, REDIRECT , them .. sometimes if she is doing something she shouldnt be doing and you need to stop her but will cause a fight trying to , you can approach her and ask her if she would come and help you fold clothes , clean dishes or something to get her focus off of what she was doing and on something more productive .. another response to her repetiveness you can write in a size she can read reminders something that she herself can read and refocus it will help build her self esteem as well as changing focus .. and never argue or debate with her .. it only aggitates them and makes them feel like less of a person and they already feel they cant do anything on their own as it stands due to this disease .. try to help her be as independent as she is capable of doing and patience is the a very good key too .. hope it helped will be praying
