The first part of the chapter speaks of a stream of water that started out as a slow trickle, but eventually became a river. First it was ankle deep, then it was knee deep, waist deep, and finally it was deep enough to swim in. There were trees along the river bank on both sides. This river flowed east through the desert into the Dead Sea. Life would flourish wherever this water flowed, and it would even bring life back into the Dead Sea, and it would be filled with every kind of fish. The trees along the river would be fruit trees of all kinds. The fruit would be food, and the leaves would be medicine.
The second part of the chapter talked about the land being divided among the 12 tribes of Israel. The descendants of Joseph would get two shares of land, and all the other tribes would get one equal share. The boundaries of this land were given. The people would inherit land based on their membership in the twelve tribes. Any foreigners would be given land within the territory of the tribe they were living with, and they would be treated as citizens of Israel.
