My 4 year old daughter has this problem. It all started when Pampers changed their diapers and I didn't realize that they were burning her bum. She starting holding it in and it has just continued and continued. She is supposed to start preschool in a week, and I just don't know what to do. We tried the suppositories and it worked for a little bit, until we went to visit family. Then it started all over again. I try to reason with her, force her to go to the bathroom, and try not to get upset, but I just don't know what to do because I am not getting anywhere. If anyone has any suggestions, I would be grateful.
The doctors told me not to use oral laxatives. When we finally saw a specialist at age 12, her colon was already extremely enlarged. We started on high dose laxatives, (two 10 mg bisacodyl per day). After about 3 years, the constipation resolved. However, the unfortunate symptom of fecal soiling has never completely resolved. It is something that she has learned to live with and manage. It is strange that her constipation and withholding are gone, but the soiling remains. I wish I would not have listened to my regular pediatritions and given her oral laxatives sooner. Please do not let this go on as long as we did. You must see a gastroenterologist, because regular pedi docs are not as familiar with treatments for this condition.
