Emotional Abuse Community Group
This group is for people who live their lives with an emotionally abusive person. Often Isolation is a barrier to getting help and support from others who know what you are going through.

My son's father was abusive and he was my first love and I never got over it. It's affected my relationships, my sense of self, everything and I know I need to face it and move on. It's hard. I don't talk to my therapist about it or anyone else it's just so painful. I realize now that my mother was also abusive and I have learned to manage her, I think, but I always feel like this dark cloud of depression is looming over me and I'd like to know if anyone has ever managed to move on and how so?

I think you have to tell your therapist what you're feeling. You don't get over something until you're ready to go through it. In your case you need to deal with this in therapy. Addressing the pain will be the first step in moving on.

Hi! I am 36 and left an abusive marriage (he was also an alcoholic) 2 years and 2 days ago. I am still not over it! Years of abuse take years of damage control, it is a long journey but definately gets easier. Support and counselling is the primary factor in helping you to move on. I understand that it is painful to talk about - I don't know where you are from, but I would suggest you get in contact with your local Domestic violence counselling group and attend sessions. The one I attended had such an ecclectic group of women, with very different backgrounds however we all endured the same relationships. Attending this group gave me grounding in what was acceptable and not, as well as assisting me when I tried to avoid reality and minimise events that occured. this was a safe haven for my feelings as everyone who attended had been in the same boat, or very similar. It may take you a while to open up and to trust these people, but persist, it can only benefit you. I am also about to start with a psychiatrist as I still have issues that I need help in understanding.

My kids father was very emotionally abusive to me, after we split he used cruel manipulation of my kids against me, ages 20,22 and 25 and yet its only the past couple of years since he finally settled with another girl he's finally got off my back, i've only been able to have normal relationship with them since they see less of him. I thought i met my knight in shining armour 9 years ago, he turned out to be cruel beyond beleif, it was pure mental torture. In the past year since i left him and found knowledge on abuse i realise that my family have been emotionally abusive all my life, so both these men appeared normal to me, i didn't seem to know the difference in love and hatred-love, it was therapy thats got me to see what had been going on, i knew the counsellor i was with duidn't have much knowledge on the subject of emotional abuse and so i stopped, but i've found a new more experienced counsellor and realise the only way to recover from all the pain is therapy it really is the only way forward.
