I know exactly what you mean, to this day i still have no idea what long division is or how to even approach it. At school my maths teacher labelled me stupid and my dad was constantly shouting at me for not being able to grasp the "simplest" concepts. I actually took a tables square into all my maths lessons and obviously was badly bullied for that.

I dont find it such a hang-up now as I am one of the lucky ones that can pawn all my difficulties of on my partner, him being dyslexic means he truly understands where im coming from when i say its just TOO difficult.

I definitely have that. In most cases I end up thinking out the math backwards. It really bothers me that every one in my classes can know math just like that and poor me is still trying to think out the first problem. I 'm NOT dumb and is acully really smart. I think that something in my brain get stopped at these math road blocks that take forever to get past. but on quite a few times I was working with a math problem ( I.q tester thing) and ended up being a genius. I know I.q testers are not perfectly acceret but this got me thinking about all the other times Ive whizzed by math problems I don't know how to explain it but it's just like Einstein

In grade 9 just before i dropped out i took a test where i was in math and english. My English and Compostion was at a university/college level and my math was at a grade 6 level. In 1994 I went back to school to get my grade 12 at a local adult learning center and graduated with my grade 12 in 1997. I had a great teacher there and we were discussing my issues with math she sent me to look on the internet for math learning disabilties. We came to a conclusion i have dyscalculia. We worked around it. I did most of my math on the computer, took breaks when i had to take a test and played fun math games online. I memorized the Times Tables when I was younger so i had no problem there. I even passed Trignomery with a B. I found I have problems with budgeting so I work around that too. I get paid once a month as im on disability. I write down how much i get and what money is going there allowing some money for Fun. I volunteer at place where I have deal with money and very few people know I got dyscalculia. They know i get fustrated when I have count the money at the end of my shift but they show me how to it with kindness.

When I was in 2nd or 3rd grade I got placed in resource (remedial) math and was stuck in that useless program until grade 10. I remember even my resource teachers getting so frustrated with me (and these were people graduated with degrees in Special Education). I think eventually they all gave up. I remember being teased and ridiculed by classmates and later on by customers. I'm glad I have finally found a support group devoted to dyscalcuia. It's nice to know I'm not alone:)

My daughter is 14 and has suffered greatly from educators that do not understand. I would love to hear more stories of how people cope and experience their dyscalculia as she feels so alone, stupid, but really smart!!
