Ok, any ideas on this matter would be appreciated.

I have a 5 month old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. From the word go we didn't use puppy pads with her, but used newspaper and she got the hang of it. Up until last week, we were doing 95% of our wee's and poo's on the newspaper !!! BRILLIANT

Now we are more or less back to square one - about 5% are on the newspaper, the rest are on the floor.........give her her dues very few are on the carpet......she will go into the dining room to do it on the laminate which is thankfully easier to clean than the carpet in the lounge.

Any ideas why we have gone backwards........we have started puppy classes, so doing a lot of training on sit, stand, down etc ..... is it that she is concentrating on these and forgotten the other things......like toileting.

Also she won't go outside ......... she will be in the garden playing, and run back inside to go on the paper / floor...... we have had the odd wee out on a walk but only about a couple of them and we have praised her and treated her for doing it outside.......but that's about it.......she won't go outside.

Any ideas on how to get her going outside would be great, and/or doing it on the paper when inside. She has a cat flap which she can get out of (at present) so has free access to the garden.

Ideas or tips would be more than appreciated........

Lysol. Get the original scent and spray it where ever they have gone at in the house. Dogs can smell things that people could never smell and even though you clean up where they went at real good they can still pick up a scent from it. And will go there again. Because even a slight scent of it will give them the urge to go again sort of like the sound of running water will give us humans the urge to go. Lysol will make them sneeze when they sniff it instead of getting the urge to go there again. Plus it kills all germs which is a bonus when it comes to fecal matter. Also keep up the praises when they she go outside, I never gave treats for it, I just applauded and told her that big dogs go outside and what a good girl she is. Make a great big fuss over how proud you are of her ect. But Lysol is something you have to have to erase the memory of going in the house or else they have a hard time holding it back once they get the urge. I also took her out about every hour to give her an opportunity because puppies have small bladders and can't hold it for very long.

There are three categories of house training types :
a) Basic house training ; the establishment of an allowable toilet area for your pet.
b) Submissive wetting ; urination occurring when greeting, disciplining or high excitement.
c) Marking ; upon reaching puberty - some dogs (male or female) will mark their territory.

hope this helps i just got a new puppy . and i have had him week and soon as he wakes up outside we go . hes almost trianed , he wakes up and he heads for the door to go out . hes only 11 weeks im impressed he learning so fast. . i didnt use news papers , i just keep taking him out . i hope this helps .

Someone shared this with me and I thought no way not this dog :). She taught her dog to ring a bell hanging on the front door when he had to go out. So, I would feed my dog wait a few then take her with the leash on to the door and encouraged her to ring the bell - I would have her push it with her nose or bat it with her paw. Then I would take her out to go potty. I did that like every hour so she would get used to ringing the bell. It works. She rings the bell to go out potty. You can also treat them if they actually go. She now will go down ring the bell and if I am busy and didn't hear her she will come up to where I am and start barking..like hurry I need to go. When we got her from the rescue place she pottyed everywhere and I was wondering why did I get a dog. SO it all ended up wonderfully. Lillie is a blessing to our family. Hope this might help someone.

Along with what the others said, you might try the trick of putting her used newspaper with her scent on it, outside where you want her to go.. After all you have told her you want her to go inside on paper...so right now she's confused. She wants to do what pleases you if she can figure out what that is.

I firmly believe in doggie doors. But you'll need to start all over to help her understand. Get rid of the newspapers. Should you see her start to squat inside, grab her and shove her out the door or take her out. When you cannot watch her, crate her...don't let her fail. Praise her when she gets it right, ignore when she doesn't. Also, don't let her see you clean her mess. Some pups delight in seeing this and will turn you into her maid...such fun!

Hi thanks everyone for your advice - well not sure in the end how it happened - but the majority of the time now she is doing it outside in the garden. Overnight we are still having accidents as she doesn't seem to like going out in the dark so we are getting our outside security light fixed, also if it's raining she won't go out - but she is getting there.
