Seven years ago my younger sibling and mother finally convinced my father to get a dog. At the time I was not a fan of animals, mostly due to never owning animals before (and being scared of dogs). I came home and there we're these two little fluffy balls of white fur in a makeshift fence in my living room. My mother had insisted on getting two! They we're a mix of Maltese and bichon frise. They were from a breeder and from the same litter. "Their names are Lola and Ruby!" My mom told me. They were so tiny, they could fit into your cupped hands. Of course over the next 7 years I fell in love with them. These two were ALWAYS together, if you would call one they would both come. They were inseparable, my mother would always refer to them as sisters (which they were).
However that changed a couple days ago. About a week ago Lola didn't seem like herself. She wasn't as attentive nor playful as usual. The dogs always slept with my parents and when my dad woke up and found Lola laying on the ground (as opposed to the usual sleeping on the bed) and he knew something was amiss. The next afternoon Lola was wimpering next to the door because she needed to go out. When my dad went to put her leash on he realized she had pooped at the door and then sat in it (He didn't make her wait long). That was the second out of the ordinary thing she has done in less then 24 hours. The next morning when my mother took her outside to pee, my mom noticed blood in her urine and we took her to the vet. We assumed a simple bladder infection, however our life would soon be turned upside down. I didn't notice how weak she was until we were in the car, she was just laying down moving her head here and there. I have seen her sick before, and this seemed "typical" (for lack of a better term). The vet said it looks like sever pancreatitis or cancer and the X-Ray showed a shadow on her liver. However, cancer signs typically show over time and she was only 7 years old. We were told we would have to take her to the major pet ICU in my area for an MRI and further treatment or she would most likely not live. We couldn't afford the roughly 10,000 we were quoted from that clinic (MRI, surgery, etc)... So we tried a second route via the vet we were currently using (a small rural clinic, that made referals to other hospitals in serious cases due to lack of proper equipment due to low funds). She was fine a week ago, I took both of them for a long walk! This hits three days later and now...
Fast forward a day (or night, everything happened so fast, so sudden)
I came home the next day after work to see her on an IV in my living room, she was so weak. The vet called and said they could do a blood transfusion, we said yes. We took here there and after 4 hours we picked her up and she seemed to improve drastically! She was moving her head again and seemed very perky! Then, the next day was absolute hell. We had taken her back to the vet in the morning and could tell she was going down hill. Her body couldn't filter the fresh blood properly, her Liver was shot (we later found out). We got her home in the early evening that night, because they didn't have overnight staffing and we (both the vet and my family) didn't want her there alone. She was wheezing, struggling just to breathe. We knew she would pass that night and spent the whole night with her. The vet was so amazing and worked with us pulling EVERY string to keep Lola alive, the machine was borrowed for the transfusion (we were given that option a day after we said we couldn't afford the ICU), She was truly an angel in our eyes.
We still have Ruby tho! But, I am absolutely terrified we will lose her too, she is so moapy and you can tell she is depressed. The more research I did on Littermates, the more scared I grew. They were INSEPARABLE FROM DAY 1.
These girls were (and Ruby still is) our babies, and the loss of one emotionally devastated us, but the thought of losing both I can't even comprehend. What can we do other then show her over-the-top affection to avoid a "Where the Red Fern Grows" type situation? I apologize for the long-winded story, but I had to vent, as well as explain the situation in its entirety. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

I adopted brothers at age 6 weeks old. One died at age 2 and the remaining brother went into depression for weeks and continued to look for him. We then adopted a female for companionship and that worked. Maybe too good, because they had puppies!
