Do One Clean Thing Today! Community Group
Housework can overwhelm us. Sometimes we may not even know where to begin. I am starting this group to help myself and others "clean house". Let's clean-up together! Each day I will post one thing to do: unload the dishwasher, scrub the toilet, sweep the floor... you get the idea. We'll all do that one thing together and talk about it. What products do you use?...
One thing that seems to get overlooked, at least in my house, are the kitchen cabinets. We clean the sink, oven, countertops, floors, fridge, I even clean the dishwasher regularly. But the cabinets often go a bit neglected. It's not until we see a bunch of fingerprints or smudgy mysterious guck on them that we stop to think to clean them. And then it may only be a spot clean to remove the mysterious guck.
So today we're going to wipe down the outsides of our kitchen cabinets.
We don't have to delve within the inner depths of them, rooting out expired food or random detritus which may lay within... no we'll leave that for another day (unless you're feeling ambitious). Today we're just going to wipe down the parts we see with the cabinet doors closed.
I like to use a mixture of Murphy's Oil Soap and water for this job. To tell you the truth I don't even know if my old late-model 1970's cabinets are real word or something else (probably something else), but Murphy's Oil Soap and water seems to do the trick. And it smells really good!
I just fill my trusty mop bucket with the soap and water solution and grab one of my old rags and I just go to town, wiping down all my cabinets. I have probably a total of 60 feet of cabinets (if that makes sense) and it takes me about 10 minutes to wipe them all down. So it sounds like a big job, but really it isn't. I counted and I have 60 cabinet doors and 20 drawers. So anyway, ten minutes isn't bad.
Sometimes I'm amazed at what I find, once I get going. The cabinets near the trash can and recycling bin are the worst - with bits of food and guck there that I hadn't even noticed before. Gross! How long has that been there? Eeewww.
The cabinets around the stove usually have splattered bits of this or that. It makes me feel a bit embarrassed that I don't clean my cabinets more often. But I am busy living a life outside of my kitchen, and there is that whole idea that a messy house is not only a sign of creativity but also a side effect of being a mother who pays more attention to her children and family than keeping a pristine house. That's my excuse, anyway, and I'm sticking to it! :)
So wipe those cabinets down, ya'll. And let us know how it goes! :)

Time to go clean them!
Our cabinets are white and so the stains and dirt show more. It look a lot of elbow grease to get them clean, and they're still not as clean as I would like them to be! >___<
Oh well. There's nothing I can do about the stains, I guess.
itsnotok - I have some spots, too, that regardless of how I scrub or what I use, it just is what it is. At least we know they are clean! :)
owlnerd - I love a small kitchen, too, when it's time to clean it! ;)
Dardi - I thought about having us do the insides, too, but I thought maybe we would wait until the weather is cooler. I don't know about everyone else, but it's been in the 90's where I live and we don't have A/C, so being up in the cabinets seemed too cruel to me. But we will get to that... when the weather cools down. What can I say - I'm a wimp in the heat! :)
