Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
Let your attorney do her work. Why did you not hire your other attorney then if you had so much trust with that one, unless he/she died? It is fine to be in the know, and if you already got an acceptable offer of support, you just saved a ton a money. IN most long term marriages in divorce, ask some of us, it takes some time, money for lawyer fees and some anguish to get to a alimony or support offer that is acceptable to all. I offered to buy my ex out of our house, trading off assets in our investments 401k etc. That we settled early on, BUT I did not have a settlement offer in place up until a few hours before we almost went to trial. We settled at the court house the day of the divorce. I had no idea if I could afford the house payment, taxes and insurance and live, because I did not have a settlement offer of alimony prior to that. That caused me some sleepless nights, because it all hinged on my alimony amount, monthly and for how long. Getting the support payment agreed, allows you settle the other items in divorce later. It is better to know what you have to live on, and work with. You do not have a full time job or a career, this gives you some breathing room so to speak.. a good thing.
BE patient. This takes time, and you did not get here overnight, you are not going to be divorced over night either. It takes time. For some a year or more in long term marriage. I think it sounds like you are going right along.. and I suspect the 38,000 is upsetting you because you did not know about it. Did he handle all the financial? HUGS
