Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
I was surprised after meeting with my attorney all the things you can add to an agreement…had no idea...like being able to make your spouse pay the court costs if he decides to default on the alimony payments. Also didn't know about collecting spousal support from his social security. Or alimony from his life insurance should he lose his job or ability to pay.
Government subsidized income [such as SS] is EXEMPT from garnishment, levy, bankruptcy, collection agencies, and etc. It mean the ex's SS funds cannot be legally accessed to collect for default /unpaid spousal support [ aka spousal alimony] awarded at divorce. You can get a levy on his privately owned vehicle.
Also for a little clarity re life insurance: The receipt gets BENEFITS from the life insurance should the ex lose his LIFE therefore unable to pay. Losing his job does not qualify.
