It is nice and comforting to know that someone has you in their mind and heart, but it's not essential for a happy, fulfilling life. And besides, True Blue Friends hold you in the same way -- they're just not living in your house.

I loved that comment Cmonge and while yes friends can do that for us, it's still not the same as being in a loving "couple" relationship for those of us who still hope for that one day. I miss being in a relationship but I'd rather be alone then back in an unhealthy relationship. My problem is figuring out how to get my ex from taking up space in MY brain, he no longer has any right to be there.

I agree we can have a fulfilling life without a romantic partner, but I too relate to the line. My family and friends have their own lives and priorities. I'm not their first thought in the morning, considered in their daily choices, sparking the neurons with my presence and importance in their lives. I know I'm loved, but I'm not THEIR LOVE, like my wasband was for me, or even my son when he was at home.

As much as I love my son, I have days here and there that I don't think of him. My mother tells me she thinks of me each week. Likewise, my friends have their own loves and lives. It's not the same as "taking up space in someone else's brain...."

Yes, I miss being part of a couple and get quite lonely at times. However, the fear of finding myself in the same sort of situation stops me from even trying with men.

I'm very fortunate that one of my daughters lives in the same town as me, and we do a lot together with the grands.

I'm more like Mirandac. I like to do things with my women friends. Take heart, mirandac, I've found that a few friends with different interests are filling the need to do things with other people, so you don't have to try to find one person to fill the role. Be happy to do things with groups and a few different people. Yes, a few have not been quite what I'm looking for, but there are some really nice people out there who are also looking for company to go to shows or movies or sew together or share hobbies. I also refuse to spend time with people who treat me less than kindly.

Two summers ago (my first alone summer) I joined a couple of Meetup groups and had a great time. One was a singles group (not dating group) and we came from all walks of life but what we had in common was free time and wanting to do fun things. Last summer I was dating so didn't do Meetups but now that I'm not dating I am debating on getting back into the group. So if you want to get out and about check into Meetups in your area.
