Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
All child support ends at age 18 in all states, but most will continue if they turn 18 before they graduate from HS, as in the case where a child turns 18 in April and then graduates in May as an example.. A child can stay on your health insurance until age 26.. even if they are married or have children of their own, go figure that. That came in to law recently.
College expenses are not a right in divorce, college is considered a privilege, not a right. But if two parents want to or can afford to agree to pay the expenses, they can make a personal agreement. I asked if this can be in a divorce decree, he said it can but can not be binding and it usually is not for that reason alone. IF you have a tax deferred education account set up, that contribution can end, but the money has to be part of the divorce of who gets what and who controls what. I have not heard a lot of people here have to deal with a "real" education account that is tax deferred.
The truth of the matter is that this is NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS. It is between your bf and his stbx. If I were you, I would seriously reconsider my level of commitment to this relationship as it sounds like it's going to be awhile before he is on solid footing again.
A marriage should be a coming together of strengths -- not needs or weaknesses. And I only mention this because you have written here before with your plans to marry this guy pretty soon. I say back off and let him get his legal and financial stuff taken care of. If this relationship is meant to be, it will weather the test of time.
I agree with cowgirl - he's still married, step back.
The two parties can agree to whatever they choose to. You said"her children " are they not his children too?
This is really between bf and his Stbx. You have to ask yourself why he would involve you in this. Is he looking for your sympathy. It's a red flag.
He is divorcing, living with parents, filing bankruptcy. Doesn't sound like a strong candidate for a marriage partner. You are sounding protective of him. He's a grown up, he should handle it.
Take care.

I remember your situation, rbsingle after a few others posted. Work on you. If I remember he lives with his mom, and has a lot of issues on the table. I wish you the best.
