The first time I heard about positive affirmations, I thought it was a bunch of hooey. After resisting the multitude of books and CDs on the subject for months, I finally decided to read about it. I was pleasantly surprised by what I learned. I started trying the technique for a day, then a week, etc. etc. It took a while before I could immediately recognize my negative thought patterns and replace them with positive affirmations. But, I am really beginning to see great results. My current life is, by most standards, not ideal, but that hasn't prevented me from being happier and more hopeful than I have been in more than 3 decades.

After reading a number of posts here recently, I realized that perhaps others might benefit from these, too. As I mentioned on another post, our thoughts create much of our suffering. What we think becomes what we believe, which gives rise to emotions that can be quite harmful to us over a sustained period of time. We can change the way our brain processes information by practicing positive affirmations and "rewiring" our thoughts to more positive ones. What's the harm in giving it a try? It doesn't cost a thing, and might just work!

So, here are a few of mine that I found particularly helpful. I have them taped throughout my house: on my mirrors, on doors, on walls, etc. I can't take credit for creating some of these. They came from a variety of sources. I've added my own twist to them. You can, too.

For all things, this too shall pass.

Always act out of love, always.

What we resist, persists.

Accept everything exactly as it is.

Nothing is good or bad, thinking makes it so.

Expect nothing, and you won't be disappointed.

Don't take anything personally.

I love and respect myself.

Don't wait for others to be kind, show them how it's done.

I'm beautiful just as I am. (this one takes a lot of time. I repeat this into my mirror each day. But, I just might be starting to believe it!)

Thoughts are not real. Love is the only thing that is.


I think you get the gist. These are but a few of the things I focus on each day. If you are already doing this, please share some of yours. If not, give it a try. You might be surprised by what happens when you do. And, if you really want to delve into your true nature and rid yourself of the negative thought patterns in your life, I highly recommend the book "A New Earth," by Eckhart Tolle. It's a great starting point.
