Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group

I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...

Has anyone been able to find support groups for divorce in your area? Divorce Care doesn't seem to be around my area. What did everyone do? I have a therapist, and I'm grateful for this site, but I would love to be able to talk (and cry) in person and maybe make some friends in the area along the way. Suggestions?

I went to church groups / meetings for divorce .
Check with your church or ANY church. .
Also check on line for (Meet ups) in your area.
Sometimes they have some support groups.
Or....or !!!!! if there aren't any groups..............
Start one up.. there are people just like you, looking
For support.

Looks like they even have an option to START your own group. If there are none in your area, maybe that would be a good thing for you to do! Get you involved in giving back, and NOTHING makes you feel as good as giving. xxoo

Timeman suggested meet ups. The website is meetup.com - type in where you live and it will display all of the various meetup groups near you. I made so many friends by attending 2 groups - one was a separation and divorce support group which plans many get-togethers and another one geared for women over 40 or so who are separated or divorced and need support. I also go to various outings with them sometimes. All the people have been very nice. Good luck!

I have tried meet up and divorce care. Not sure I'm ready to start a group. I'm still in the crying every other minute phase. But I appreciate the suggestions. A lot of the meet up groups are too far away. But I will ask my therapist. And I got in contact with a Stephen Minister, so hopefully all of these will help.

I live in a large urban area, and having moved to a new town, I used meet-up to engage with new friends for leisure activities. It's been a great resource for me, I've met tons of people and done things that I'd never done before! I was sort of past the need for a divorce support group, but out of curiosity I looked to see if any existed in my new area, and there were more than a few!

So I'd suggest meet-up is a great resource. And starting your own group, well, why not? You don't need to take it that seriously, have a charter or agenda, it can just be coffee chat at a local spot to get started and explore commonalities. Give it a try! My friend started a group that I'm now a co-organizer on with just an idea to get women over 40 out doing outdoor activities and now we have over 300 members . These things have a way to catching on...
