Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...
Sorry, I just don't like her. Maybe, I'm being biased here. :)
I'm curious to what others have to say. Like I said, still a little fresh here. When I divided up the Xmas ornaments I did not give stbx any of the ornaments the kids made.
Do what is best for your children. What they want is your only consideration.
Would you rather have her upset with you or your children? Who's more important after all you've been through?
Just my opinion.
I would tell her to contact the kids directly. It's their stuff so leave you out of it.
I would tell the kids separately that if they choose to give her a small sentimental item, you will send it off TO THEM and they can do as they like. They might also want a couple small items for themselves during their college years ... memories of their childhood and connection with you. Keep it to small stuff that is easy to retrieve and send to them.
An important qualifier, make make sure this is not too draining or burdensome on you. If it is, the kids can get the items themselves next time they visit. You have plenty to do getting on with your new life and do not need to be running to the attic every time X calls.
If she is really as cruel as you describe, it was just a passing fancy for her or, more likely, just a way to cop a feel off of your emotional reaction to the call. If that's her true personality, she probably has moved on by now and isn't hung up on the items. My guess is the thing she's toying with is her past relationship with you. Otherwise, she would have called the kids directly.
Unless you too are clinging to that old connection, I would nip any future requests in the bud, redirecting them as you can (to the kids for example) instead of giving them so much thought and deliberation.
Just my take, but I'm admittedly a newb to the whole separated thing.
