Divorce after Twenty years together Community Group
I want to start something for those of us that were married for a long long time. I think that we face a little different issues than those who were dating for a few years or even married for shorter period of time. Being married for so long we have older children some have grandkids dealing with teenagers and their reaction to the divorice empty nesters dating after 40...

I know in my head this is for the best, but it still hurts.
This is normal because no matter what the marriage was like it's over and it's a loss so grieving comes with the territory. You had to put it out of your mind before because there were important things to do. Now the important thing is letting the grief happen. That's the best way to get through it; to feel the feelings as they come. Eventually it will get better.

This must be the depression phase of the five stages of grief. I think I've been through the first three already. So, the fifth one is acceptance. I feel like I've already "accepted" the fact that I am now divorced and on my own. Perhaps there is more to it than I know.
I think you're right and there is more to getting over a divorce than any of us realise until we're in it. I was the one who chose to leave. I thought I'd be instantly happy just to get away from the bloke who was driving me to distraction, but I still grieve the loss of that wonderful man I married and also the dream I held close to my heart of growing old together with our kids and grands all around us.
If you allow yourself to feel the sadness, you'll do better than if you try to squash it down. I'm 6 1/2 years out and still have my days. I really loved that guy I met at 13 and married at 18.
