Dermatillomania Obsessive Skin Picking Community Group
This group is for people with OCD who are obsessive skin pickers.
My story, I guess? First post here...
zwanghaft
I'm not really sure where to start... I only joined a couple of weeks ago and haven't actually looked around the site yet, so I hope this all works out...
Okay, well I'm zwanghaft. I'm fourteen years old, and so far only my parents and my best friend know about this... I just don't know how to tell people that I pick my own skin off. First of all, I have always done this ever since I can remember, but in the past few years it's gotten really bad. Last summer, my parents said that I would never get a boyfriend if I carry on picking my hands because they won't want to hold my hand.
They thought I stopped but I really didn't. They found out again recently. Well actually my mum did, and she reacted badly, then she told my dad. I mean fair enough. My dad was the sympathetic one, but yeah, my mum reacted badly. I love her but she feels like it's her fault. Emotionally we're very similar, she struggles with depression.
Clearly there are a lot of parts I'm missing out because I don't want to say too much really... But, she reacted badly in the way she said "It's just like that girl you were friends with who self-harmed" which turned to "If I ignore you it'll basically be the same as me giving you a razor blade".. To "Why don't I just give you a potato peeler and you can peel all your skin off, if that would make you happy?" And I pretended not to care and not to be emotional because I'm just thinking: Dude, this is my life. I'm being careful, and I'm trying to stop. Get off my back. She cried when she left my room - and I cried when she left my room.
I left the house for a little while, when I came back my dad talked to me about it for the first time.
For the most part I have stopped now. What made me feel so guilty is the fact that I did it on my legs, hips and stomach. I've only stopped doing that in the past week. But they only check my hands and arms.
My scars are not easy to hide. My hands, arms, legs, feet, even. My friends notice and two of them have asked, and I can't think of a lie so I just say it's none of their business.
I feel like telling my friends so they can maybe understand... Any tips there?
I'm talking to my friend right now, the one that already knows. I'm feeling bad, one of my friends is angry at me and it makes me hate myself.
Oh, and happy Star Wars Day! May the Fourth be with you! Haha, I know I'm a nerd, I'm lame. Good-day, folks! XD
