First off i want to say i'm sorry that i haven't been on the site in a while i lost my internet connection and only now have access to the internet, i probably won't be on too much this is a shared computer , and as i live with my family who know nothing about my having this disorder and i don't intend to tell them, i have to be careful about being on the site. welcome to all the newbies. So i wanted to know if you have told anyone other than a therapist who did you tell and how did you go about it? How did they react? i may not want to tell my family but other than being on this site no one else knows and i would like to tell people but i'm afraid of how it will be taken. i have been doing better lately, i finally finished reading the book "STRANGER IN THE MIRROR", and i must say it helped me out quite a bit. There was one sentence in particular that was like a slap in the face, it said about living life as a walking suicide and it being the ultimate price that we pay. that was a wake up call because i fought depression and suicide and i believed i beat it but reading that made me realize that i might not have commited suicide but i was living as a walking suicide, now i didn't decide to live just to live like that at least not consiously, and i certainly don't intend to continue like that. i was doing bad at the time, i was having trouble even leaving the house, i also have chronic pain which can make the DP worse, recently i have started taking different medication for my pain and it has made a huge improvement for my pain, and i was able to go back to work which i hadn't in over a month. i have been dissociating still but it is alot less and i started to almost feel like me again, which i've had this disorder since i was a kid, so not really sure who i'm supposed to be anymore but i can feel again and i am trying to learn new coping skills, i have been happier and more animated which when i'm DP i'm kinda lifeless. Anyway let me know if you told anyone and how it went and suggestions on how to go about it would be appreciated!

I have told only three people who are my best friends. Two of them just thought that it was really weird and didn't know what to even say, and the other has DID so she was able to relate a little bit. I told them as we were texting because I was having a super bad moment one day and was freaking out above t. So I just texted them about the feelings and thoughts I was having. It turned out okay. I didn't lose them and they're still my closest friends. Just be honest with them and say that you're really struggling and you don't need them to understand, but that you need support. Even if it's just for them to be aware that it happens. I told one of my friends that she'll realize when it happens and it helped like if she would hold my hand or give me something physical to touch and hold on to or smell. Don't be afraid :) <3

I really do understand. I have yet to tell anyone outside of my therapist and doctor. I don't know how to bring it up. I don't know how they will react.

I have been living with it all my life.... as long as I can remember so at least since I was 6. My doctors know and my children know. No one else. What surprised me so much when I learned it was a disorder is that no one can tell I am different, no one can tell I am dealing with DP. I don't look any different at all. I always thought people looked at me like a freak..... but when I started to actually try to take notice of externals it turns out no one was even looking at me....... Only my therapist knows that it is here 24/7/365..... I have not had a break in over 10 years now. I was initially diagnosed with DP, then they added Dissociative Amnesia, then Dissociative Fugue, then instead of having 3 dissociative disorders they just changed it to DID NOS.
