The age of the Diabetic is upon Us
lostonrye
This is probably the same case in the USA, Canada etc
When I was younger I was thin active and if anyone had said i would become diabetic i would have laughed
People usually don;t take diabetes seriously until it happens or they are told they are pre diabetic,
I guess anyone who discovers a cure would be a next Noble prize winner
Seems diabetes is the most costly disease as we are around quite a while having to use medical resources for all sorts of interventions
all the clinics in hospitals have a high proportion of diabetic patients as a group
A frightening prospect if being non diabetic puts you in a minority in the over 50s age!

Another 700,000 Britons will be diagnosed with diabetes by 2020, pushing the total to 4.4 million, without concerted government action to persuade people at risk to radically overhaul their lifestyle, campaigners have warned.
The rise will put severe strain on the NHS, which currently spends 10% of its budget treating the consequences of the condition, according to Diabetes UK.
The charity's estimate of 700,000 extra cases in England, Scotland and Wales by the end of the decade is based on projections compiled by the NHS-funded Yorkshire and Humber Public Health Observatory, which monitors the number of peopled affected.
About 3.7 million people in Britain have diabetes, including 850,000 who are believed to have it without knowing.
"I have grave fears about the potential impact of an extra 700,000 people with diabetes, which is almost the combined population of Liverpool and Newcastle. If this projected increase becomes reality it would be a calamity for the healthcare system and a disaster for public health," said Barbara Young, chief executive of Diabetes UK. "But the government and the NHS do not seem to have grasped the scale of the impending crisis and at the moment we seem to be sleepwalking towards it."
The charity is urging ministers to put more resources into preventing type 2 diabetes, which is closely associated with obesity and accounts for 90% of cases of the disease. It also believes they should fund a major public health campaign to raise awareness of how serious type 2 diabetes can be and what the risk factors are – such as being overweight, having a large waist or a close relative with the condition.
The Department of Health said it wanted to prevent people developing diabetes and was overhauling the NHS to try to improve treatment of the condition.
"We are taking wide-ranging action to tackle diabetes. First through prevention – by encouraging healthier lifestyles and identifying those at risk and supporting them to take the necessary action to prevent diabetes. Secondly, by better management of the condition, both in hospital and in the community," it said.

A lot of us are guilty of emotional eating. When something upsets us, we find comfort in food. That's the case for me anyway. Mindless eating...maybe they could help us out with that?
it put leaflets out on the notice board I have never seem anyone reading them.
they only go there to seem the kids plastic toys or to get a balloon
And it makes little difference to behavior. maybe we should electrify the chairs .and give the Dinners a few thousand volts after 4 bites of the burger. Its called aversion therapy
Just a suggestion!
Lesa, my HUGE problem is the GOVERNMENT FORCING the resturants to sell the healthier foods. If they want to sell the cheaper foods which is not so healthy, not heart attack on a plate, they should be able to.
its bankrupting the health service over here
there is a motto called the Polluter pays for enviromental pollution So why not tax fast food as we did with cigarettes.
how about 50 cents on a big Mac to begin with
or anything over 300 cal a $1 surcharge.
If this food is causing as much damage to society as Alcohol We maybe should tax the same
and use the tax to subsidise the good stuff
The unwritten rule is if you want to eat healthy, you have to have lots of money to spend on foods. I would say all of the greens which are a pretty good price if they are not a reduced salt and corn bread goes great with it although I know many would say that's horrible for health, but it's affordable for me.
People have to be able to make personal choices As an ex drinker and smoker I know how addictive addiction is.
Scotland has just enacted a law making a unit of Alcohol cost at least 50p just under a Dollar
to try and get people to cut down
It might work or people will just travel to England to get it cheaper or worst brew their own
Cider must be one of the easiest drinks to brew
so the Scots being a canny lot I can see more Home made stuff appearing
But in the choice of a big Mac or a can of Brew the booze will win out with some people all the time!
