i was told the same thing and I am the same way
I hated saying good bye to my nosh before bedtime
I discovered that i had a heck of a time sleeping and I blamed it on not being able to eat i discovered however it was due to my sugar being all whacked out once my sugar got down and got normal I am now able to sleep again so bear through it for a couple days Honest it does get better.
What is your late night reading before a snack??
I was always told by the diabetes class that any thing i choose should not raise my sugar more than 140 150.
So make sure to check your sugar before eating (make sure the snack is 2 hours AFTER dinner) and than 2 hours after eating the snack check it again to see how much a spike is happening.
Personally I did leave all my snacks go for a while and had a tea before bed or a glass of milk.
Now though that my sugar is back in order I allow myself something small and light before bed
a low sugar small yogurt, 5 cheese and crackers, or peanut butter crackers or a half bagel
I try to do it as i said 2 hours after 3 hours even after dinner and I do not have anything else.
However be aware I KNOW these foods in these amounts do not shoot my sugar up you need to learn what does and does not shoot yours up. the only way to learn what works with your system is testing
Also i try to keep my snacks within 15 to 20 carbs i have two snacks a day
for a snack and my meals are 20 to 30 MAX carbs a meal 3 meals a day
As long as I stay in that I keep it pretty level
I only recently started following that advice gain and am glad i did because my sugar was out of whack in the 300's for too long.
Very easy to snack in the evening even if were not hungry. I think TV commercial suggest go get food. It is hard to break that habit and only have something light
Checking BS will tell you how much you can snack or not. I usually eat half a whole graham cracker just before I go to bed to carry me through the night so sugars don't drop, half an apple with peanut butter, or crackers with cheese as April said.
All this monitoring is tedious I think I need to get some diet sheets and stick to them!
Regards
Arline this is why i tell everybody who asks me to take a few weeks and do the testing and food diary to learn what they can and can not eat.
i have met folks who never checked what worked for them they just go by books or forum posts and assume what spikes one will spike another and it is not always try.
Some things some eat will work for others
my new snacks i eat too are sardines, pickled beats, pickled egg, (I made my own fresh the other day without sugar and using splenda i was so wanting some and never made them. i did a trial run to see if they spiked then tested to see how many I could eat and well It works I can eat like 8 slices)
pretzel wheels i got to watch how many with a lil cream cheese on them just a little
I love pickles. I am going to give that a go too
As far as the monitoring being tedious Yea it is but once you get a idea of what is what you do not have to test as often.
I never keep a diary or weigh food. I guesstimate. After a while you just know what you can and can't eat. I'm going to a luncheon and theatre Wed afternoon and I expect to cheat. BUT for dinner I will just eat veggies to counteract what I had for lunch. That's the way I balance the good with the bad.
My husband and daughter like their breakfast eggs with a slightly runny yolk and I can hardly watch them eat it. Guess it's just one of those weird little food quirks.
Now, pickles. I love 'em. Dill and sour only please though. Another little tidbit about pickles and the brine. I thought it was just an old wives tale, but I read about drinking the pickle juice to help with relieving leg cramps. When I was having such a horrible problem with them I gave it a shot and was actually able to sleep for more than an hour at a time for a change. Apparently it's the magnesium in the brine that helps. For a while I felt like a pickle juice vampire, draining the juice off the pickles as fast as I ate them. My husband was beginning to wonder if there was some other medical issue going on the way I was scarfing down the things. I reminded him that my tubes were tied and we very much safe on that count. :)
April you do what we all should do as far as checking what works and what doesn't. No it isn't easy but it certainly is worth the effort when you think that down the line, people that don't check or don't care lose their feet or legs or worse. So when you think about the concequences it certainly is worth the effort it takes to find out what is what with the foods we put in our bodies. Checking is something I slacked off on but I am getting it back on track now.
