This helped me
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Also, can I ask why your name is barn owl? I have a special spiritual connection to owls and your post happened to appear on this website today when I was feeling especially sad and lost.
Hope all is well.

BarnOwl, I am so sorry for your loss. I can totally relate. Our first family pet Whiskers, was picked from the litter by me at Age 14. He lived 17 yrs. He was King of the neighborhood, once staring down a white German Shepard (Duchess) who was nasty (two houses over). He died in my arms as the Vet put him to sleep. I was 31 and heartbroken, but he was very sick.
Time does heal but you never forget - especially the really special pets. It has been 5 weeks now for you. Hope you are feeling better. I did have Dreams about Whiskers for some years after he died. I loved him very much. I had another cat 5 yrs later and now I have 2 yr old Snowflake who is a total CHARACTER! I'll post her pic and story when I can.
Take Care,
Melanie
To the original post whom lost her kitten/cat. I can relate with your experience with sudden loss. As painful as letting go is, please have no guilt, you did your best as a loving pet owner. As this is the cycle of life, nothing living, leaves this world alive.

My dog, Star, had every medicaton, treatment, etc., but when she got into kidney failure, I said enough is enough....and I wasn't talking about the money, I was talking about her life...She was over 14, had very bad stomach, didn't want to eat...and she got kidney disease. Missing her everyday....But Heppy, died, because fo negligance of a vet, took vet to court, lost, but had my day in court....Horrible vet, heppy had 3 seizers in vets office, she stayed overnight, and vet never even told me...He knew she was going to die, and told me to bring her back in 2 weeks, knowing she had kidney failure...what a bastad, still practicing....I miss her so much...
she died 3 days after seeing miserable vet.
