my son is 10 and we do stuff all the time.

an easy one is the baking clay that you can make at home. You make the clay and mold it... then bake it and paint it. They make great ornaments too... we may make some special ones for the tree this year.

I will have to look up the clay recipe again if you want it. There are lots of sites if you google "family craft"

also.. my son likes the plain little wooden boxes from the craft store.. then he paints them.

or maybe some paper chinese lanterns
or make beaded stuff.. like bracelets and necklaces

do any of these sound good?

I have lots of craft books for kids. I got some at the library too.. they are in the kid section near the teacher shelves.

Stuff we used to do when I was a kid... Similar to what mkat posted above

Latch hooking (do they still make those???) or cross-stitching (if any one is handy with a needle)
Bead work (keychains and bracelets, etc)
Sun catchers (those bead things you put in the oven to melt with a mold) or Shrinky-dinks
Paint - by - numbers
Clay (I have a recipe for homemade salt/flour/oil/water clay too - but it's not as durable as real modelling clay)

I wish I had my ollllllllllld book (written in 1968) called " What to do when "there is nothing to do" ". It was full of ideas for crafts and together time, broken down by age group, and even had sections for sick days and travel times. It came in handy a lot when my former step-children said " we're bored!"

Well, when my daughter was 9 we were into horses. We would go to the local craft store and pick up books about horses and then buy tracing paper. Then we would trace the horse and color it in any color we wanted. Sometimes we would add a horn and make him a Unicorn and sometimes we would add wings and make her an "Angel" Then I would ask her to name them. After we named them, we would paste the picture on a big piece of poster board and then I would ask my daughter to help me write a story about this magical creatures...and we would write the fantasy tale!!!
My Daughter is now 26 and recently married to her boyfriend of 7 years and to this day we are still into horses (9 on our property now, 2 belonging to us) She became a wonderful artist and works with pottery and is an impecciable journalist, that when she writes, it is always from the heart. She is in college now studying to be a Psycologist, but she is and always be that "Artsy Girl."

My 12 yr old daughter and I like to cook, as far as crafty stuff....we get plain wooden frames and use scrapbook stickers and "jewel" it up with a glue gun. We both like photography, and like to jazz up the plain frames.

There is a clay (polymer) called Sculpey. It stays soft until you bake it, which you can do in your oven. It works great for making beads, small picture frams, statues. The colors are awesome, and a package of sample colors runs from ten to twenty dollars. You and your daughter could have lots of fun with that.
