We have just started getting black squirels here in england. Not been lucky enough to see one yet though.

I love black squirrels. When I was little, we had a nest of babies in the tree outside my window. One day the mother got hit by a car, so my mother brought them into the house and we raised them. I must have been 2 or 3 at the time but it was two grey squirrels and on black (mother had been black also). Once they were fully able to fend for themselves, we released them back into our yard. Still on summer nights I’d crack open my window against my mom’s wishes as let in (my squirrel, the other two both called Pete were the province of my sister & mom) to curl up on my pillow at night and sleep next to me.

It wasn’t until I lived in Texas that I realized not all squirrels are created equal and the ones down there were vicious hostile creatures best left to their own devices.

But I do so miss Blackie.

How pretty! I have squirrels that eat peanuts out of my lap. I have never seen a black one either. Neat.

I really guess black squirrels is a northern Midwest thing. Now that I think about all of the places I’ve lived in the States and Europe, I can’t recall seeing black squirrels anywhere else.

How weird that I never realized that until now? My hometown is primarily gray and black squirrels with very few brown to be found.

Funny note: the town I live in now has a law making it illegal to worry squirrels, or harass them in any way. I was watching a YouTube video on weird laws recently and learned about it. Good thing my grandpa doesn’t live with me. He used to go livid when the squirrel raided the bird feeders and would harass them to no end when I was little, lol.

We have a ton of black squirrels here..... They're all over.... I feed the birds and squirrels so they're always waiting for me.....smile.....

We have mostly black and grey...… I seldom see red squirrels.... what colour are most of your squirrels??

Black & gray in my hometown about 4 hours northeast of where I live now, and mostly brown, black and some red in this area. Haven’t yet spotted any grey squirrels,

Are you in the Midwest area too? You don’t have to answer that if you don’t want to. I was just curious as so many of the comments have been about not having seen black squirrels before. I suspect it is a location thing so that’s why I ask.

I’ve never really studied up on squirrels or thought much about it until I made this post, lol.
