May 4...
Star Wars Day is an unofficial holiday in May created by fans to honor the Star Wars franchise created by George Lucas. Observance of the holiday spread quickly due to Internet, social media, and grassroots celebrations.
International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4. It was instituted after proposal emailed out across the world on January 4, 1999 due to the deaths of five firefighters in tragic circumstances in a wildfire in Australia. May 4 used to be a traditional Firefighters' Day in many European countries, because it is the day of Saint Florian, patron saint of firefighters.
Mass & Blessing of the Bikes Day, this connection becomes even deeper as riders gather for a special mass to have their bikes blessed. Coincidentally, motorcyclist even have their very own Patron Saint, St. Columbanus of Bobbio. St. Columbanus lived from 540-615AD was known for being rugged, handsome, and being irresistible to women; not to mention having a liking for beer. In fact, it is said that one of his miracles involved creating more bread and beer for a gathering. Sounds like a good match for Patron Saint.
National Candied Orange Peel Day
National Candied Orange Peel Day is dedicated to...you guessed it.... candied orange peels!
Now, just what the heck is a candied orange peel? And, is it edible? Yes, it's edible. If you are a chef or a baker, then you know just what it is, and how to use it. For the rest of us, we likely have enjoyed it in seasonal baked goods all of our lives, without even knowing we have eaten it.
Candied orange peels are a boiled, sliced, sugar added treat. You can eat them by themselves. But most often, they are used in holiday cookies, snacks, and fruitcake.
On this day, bake some cookies or other recipes that use candied orange peels. Then, eat and enjoy!
National Orange Juice Day
Orange juice is one of the most popular juice in the United States. It is a great source of Vitamin C, Folic Acid and potassium. If consumed with a high iron food, orange juice helps the body absorb the iron. However the acids in orange juice can cause an empty stomach to become upset and also cause tooth decay if teeth are not brushed shortly after. Drinking through a straw will also prevent tooth decay. Never put juice in your baby’s bottle!
If you want to buy real orange juice be sure that the label states that is 100% juice with no sugar added. While juice can be healthy too much is not good for you. Limit yourself to 1 cup of juice a day or 1/2 of juice for your children. Eating the whole fruit is much better for your body.
Orange juice is not only used as a drink but can also be used to marinate meat and as an ingredient in recipes.
