I am finally admitting to myself that I have a problem with gambling,. I read through some of the discussions and agree that there is a "part" of me that causes me to go back to casinos even though I know I will only lose in the end. When I think about all of the things I could have done with the money I've lost I feel like such a loser. I am committed to figuring out how to keep whatever is in my brain causing me to do this to stop. I do not think GA is for me as the only GA meetings I can locate in my State are 50+ miles from where I live and the nature of my job which highly public, would be risky...I am keeping a journal, finding other activities to keep me from thinking about gambling. and owning my problem with family. Any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
Hello. I haven't been here for a while since I haven't gambled for over 6 years now.
I tried GA for a long time and although 12 stepping is a good way to live, I still struggled with gambling.
Here is how I quit.
I identified that "part" of me that bullied all the other "parts" of me into thinking I had to gamble. I then got those parts to team up against the bad part and shut him down. Individually the good parts could not defeat the bad part, but collectively it was pretty easy and quite successful for me.
Life goes on and I have more evolving to do but being gambling free is a great feeling for me.
You can do it, it's only as difficult as you want to make it.
Thanks for the encouragement. I really believe in my heart I can conquer this. I started gambling about 15 years ago but I would say it turned into a compulsion about 7 years ago. There definitely is a part of me that seems to take control of me....bullying me as you describe. I think one of the keys for me is having a plan for my time and being more proactive with how I spend it.
I am so glad I found this site. It has really helped me to be more accountable to myself by knowing there are others out there who have gone through this. thanks!
