The first day is the most important. Compulsive gambling not only took my money, but it changed my morals, and values. I joined a 12 step gambling group 8 years ago, and although it helped me get my morals back, I continued to gamble until I got counseling. My counselor helped me identify the "part" of me that overpowered all the other "parts" of me. When I realized this "part" is not my friend, and does not need to be coddled, I found it realitively easy to not listen to that "part".
I have not gambled for over 2 years now, and I still have reprocussions because of it. I have family who does not trust me, (my wife divorced me) I have terrible credit ratings, and many close people don't believe I have even quitted.
A gambling addiction is as horrific as any other addiction, and it seems harder to quit than many chemical addictions.
Relax, as this will not all be OK over night. Work a positive program, ask for help, and build a relationship with yout higher power.
