Hi, I'm new here and I was wondering if any of you have struggled, like myself, to find out what is my true diagnosis. I was diagnosed with Bipolar II for several years, but never really believed it. The first psych. who suggested PTSD was in 2011, but then he left and was replaced with someone who rejected that and insisted I had Borderline Personality Disorder. Her treatment of me was incredibly damaging. I started doing my own research and came across the CPTSD diagnosis and it fits me perfectly. Nine months ago, I was fortunate enough to have found a great therapist who supports my diagnosis and never tried to push the BPD label on me, though I still often worry that I might have it. I admit I do have some of the traits but I go back and forth with believing that I suffer with the disorder because of the negative things I seem to come across about it. I do know that the stigma is slowly declining, but there is still a long way to go. I just wondered if anyone else has experienced similar things and how can you tell if you have both disorders?
I have been amazed at the level of ignorance in the mental health profession when it comes to one of its principle functions - diagnosis. Mental health workers are largely incompetent in this area, which is not just a major disappointment for me, but is also very scary.
I have been previously misdiagnosed as having schizo-affective disorder, personality disorder, and schizophrenia. All of these diagnosis were incorrect.
What I have is PTSD from severe child abuse, the kind that is unspeakable.
I have suffered abuse at the hands of mental health professionals. The diagnoses of BPD really ticks me off because I believe the 'bad dog' type therapies are the worst possible thing for survivors of abuse. You can't treat abuse WITH abuse, in my opinion.
I've been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depression. One shrink tried to diagnose me with BPD after I asked him to correct some errors in his lengthy report. I refused that diagnosis -which I only knew was possible after a wise person told me so.
Psychology is considered a pseudo-science by many. I believe that courts now demand that 3 psychiatrists reports are needed to conclude if someone is mentally ill because there is a VERY large room for error in judging behaviours of others.
I too have never been diagnosed correctly and am at my wits end with seeking help. I have had poor, even damaging "counseling", and feel like giving up. I was severely mentally abused as a child by both parents and it continues with my husband, the only relationship I have. I'm 57 and am the family scapegoat so I have no contact with my FOO. I believe I have C-PTSD (some call it bpd and what abuse I get for that!), and I'm tired of the whole damn thing. But I do keep on trying. I haven't seen the negative stigma declining in my life, and can't find decent treatment,so I am trying to do online support groups to get by. I'd appreciate any feedback (helpful) that anyone can offer. Thanks.
So sorry I got off on my own tangent. I guess I m tired. But yes I had severe chronic depression and generalized anxiety with constant suicide attempts due to many traumatic events ( I.e. had 2 severe eye injuries, the 2nd being assaulted on an NYC subway with a brass ring in which my eye was completely destroyed and I was rendered blind). This was only the beginning of it all. No professional s could even diagnose me with with the depression and anxiety let alone ptsd and cptsd. No one ever asked me about what I'd been through in my lifetime. LAME! I had to figure it out for myself.

When I read about C-PTSD I felt such relief.
