Chronic myelogenous leukemia affecst the balance of blood cells in the body, disrupting the normal balance. The cancer cells eventually begin to outnumber and push out the good cells, and could lead to anemia and easier bleeding/bruising. I was just dx with leukemia and i dont relly no much about it.I know that it is a form of blood cancer and thats really about all that i no. I no that my hemotologist is going to be starting me on kemo therapy .I just feel lost right now.Im only 33 yrs old and i have other health issues to deal with on top of this.I have fibromyalgia AS crone's disease and some other health issues.I dont have a supportive family either and im a single mum of 2.Thanks for listening

Hello. I hate to hear that you have all these medical conditions. I know this diagnosis may scare you, but from what I understand this is able to be controlled by medication. My father was just diagnosed in December 2010. I got on this website and found a lot of information about this disease. My father has had oral medication for this, and has few side effects from it. There are people who have survived this disease for many, many years. I want to encourage you to keep coming back to this website, because you will definitely get support from others on here. thank you tracy for your input and support.I dont no if cancer is a hereditary disease or not but all of my family on my mother's side had cancer they have all past away now due to it.Im just praying that because they caught it early that i ll be able to beat it.One of my aunts had leukemia as well she beat it three times before she past away in Febuary of 07 .

From what I understand, CML is not something that is inherited. It is a mutation of the Philadelphia chromosome. The only way you can get CML is if the chromosome becomes mutated. From what I understand this form of leukemia is a slow progressing form. If I am wrong, I hope someone will correct me. I did a lot of reading of CML on this website and other ones, too. You hang in there!

HI: You said you will be starting with CHEMO. I am sure its one of the latest oral medications you will be taking. If you give me some information, I might be able to help you. I have had CML since 1998. You can live with this disease, and be okay. I am on Gleevec.
You said your a single Mom. That has to be rough without a supportive family as you mentioned. Please send me a message anytime. I do not know your name, except for sleepless.

thanks for the info ladies.Susan I'm not sure what I'm going to be put on yet as i still have to go back to the hematologist on Wednesday.The reason why i said chemo is because i don't no if those medications are available in Canada but i guess i will find out on Wednesday.

Hi Sleepless,

Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis and the various hardships you have been/are going through. I can tell you that CML is a very treatable form of Leukemia. Most people take a pill everyday and are able to continue with their life. There are some side effects, but most of the time they are more bothersome than anything really troubling. There are great resources available for CML and most people today are seeing CML as a chronic disease and not a fatal one.

I hope you get started on treatment soon and you respond well. Try to keep cool, the beginning is the hardest part.

Hi there, I have CML and also have 5 girls around your age. I'm so sorry your family is not supportive. It's very overwhelming at first, so much to take in but you will be fine and live a long life to love and have fun with your children. That is my wish for you. Stay strong and let this site be your support. Will keep you in my thoughts
