I read somewhere that the past only causes us problems if we think about it, which brings it back into our present life.
The best we can hope to do for ourselves is to concentrate on every day as each day has enough worries of its own. We certainly don't have to choose to bring our past with us today. But again, much easier said than done.
Christ can set us free, all we have to do is ask and believe.
