There are times, like now for me, when my depression is so severe that I lose all emotional feelings.
This also includes my feelings concerning the Lord. Right now I can't even feel his help, his presence. I know He is there, caring for me, holding me, and caring for me, I just don't feel it.
My daily devotions are almost void of meaning.
My prayers seem to bounce off the ceiling, yet I know He is there listening.
I suppose I should be grateful for the KNOWLEDGE that he is with me, even though I can't feel it.
Does anyone else every experience this?
Can you give me some ideas for how to breakthrough the barriers that don't even let me FEEL God's love?
I know exactly what you are talking about. I am a fairly new Christian (7 years) and there have been very few times when I have actually felt his presence and comfort. I'm sorry, but I don't have any ideas. This is something that I have struggled with since the beginning.
WHY DO YOU FEEL DEPRESSED, I WILL GIVE YOU SCRIPTURES , NOW I AM TIRED, NEED TO GET SOME SLEEP, I WAS FEELING JUST LIKE YOU, FAITH HAS SAVED ME, TRUST IN ''THE LORD'' HE CAN LIFT YOU OUT OF IT, BLESSINGS LUCY**

And depression can be caused by chemical imbalances in the brain. I have a wonderful relationship with Jesus, absolutely assured of my salvation, able to draw near to Him in my time of need and receive mercy and kindness, but was still a mental mess in my everyday life for years. Got diagnosed at age 62 with OCD and chronic PTSD, both of which have known serotonin imbalances and HPa axis problems in the PTSD brain. I also had very, very low levels of Vitamin D, which can also cause depression. Meds for all have given me a new life of which I am better able to concentrate and function on a practical basis and more so in ministry as His Life in me leads the way.
And by the way, one of the reasons I was so late in getting diagnosed was my buy-in to the church voice saying not to take medications for depression. Let God heal me. Well, you know what, church people use a pacemaker for the heart and take meds for plaqued up arteries and every other biological organ problem EXCEPT the brain. Oh yeah, no one talks about hemorrhoids either. Now I know better and have a different voice to those still carrying the stigma against mental disorders/illnesses. Not saying that's anyone here; just saying the stigma is out there.
BYZBEE, SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOU. I TOO HAVE BOUTS OF DEPRESSION, EVEN WITH THE WONDER MEDS. TODAY, I SANG MOST OF THE DAY, TO THE LORD. I MADE UP VERY HAPPY SONGS. NOW, I SOMBER. I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS THE SAME THING AS YOU ARE FEELING. IT IS AN UNFEELING. WHATSNEW2DAY IS A DEAR FRIEND AND I UNDERSTAND WHAT SHE IS TALKING ABOUT, BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN I JUST GO BLANK, EMPTY, VOID. I KNOW TOO THAT JESUS IS HOLDING OUT HIS HAND TO ME AND HE IS PATIENT I JUST NEED TO REACH BACK. I WILL PRAY FOR YOU AND YOUR HEART.
MARIE
Oh, Byzbee, I am sorry my comment sounded like it came from a smarty-pants. In re-reading the post, I now need to explain. So often we are conditioned to not feel to be silent, even in church and especially is some churches. That link I gave awakens the soul, reassures the believer of Jesus' personal touch, His love, His total acceptance: we come before Him with no condemnation.
The feelings can be dulled by bio-disorders. I call it Botox for my nerve endings; they are just done feeling for awhile and will come back in due time, but meanwhile cool my jets and take a breather. That's when I go "fetal" for awhile. Now that I am on meds, I don't need that position anymore.
Again, I was wrong in how I phrased my answer to you. It came across as trite and needed more explanation. May this post bring reconciliation for possible hurt feelings.
Thank you, Marie, for having my back. I have your back to Byzbee.
I have taken no offense at anyone's reply, so no worries whatsnewtoday! I completely understand both what you said and what you meant, there is no need for an apology.
My life has been lately one of ups and downs due to divorce proceedings, but it was that very separation and divorce proceeding that brought me back to my faith. God does work all things together for good.
I am keeping up with my daily devotions and they are bringing me back closer to God again. Bringing ME BACK, as I know he has never left and is holding me in his arms.
Marie, I too have music either on in the background or I am singing the old hymns I grew up with. They help me as they do you, so in that we are also sisters.
Thanks to everyone for your replies.
With my divorce likely being finalized "shortly," I look forward to starting this next phase of my life, secure in the knowledge that God has plans for me and my future.
Thank you, ByzBee, for understanding. May we all share what our personal Savior does in the midst of our circumstances. I stand amazed each time He shows the healing work He HAS ALREADY DONE at the Cross on my behalf. What joy when He lifts the veil of His new creation! I am as surprised as others are when they see the change in me through His transformation.
And yes, Jesus is alive and well in the same disordered body that now takes meds.

Sometimes it is just reassuring to know that others feel the same way at times.
