Overcomers, Thorn in the flesh, Ephesians 3:20

healthseeker
Three messages I'm posting here just for later retreival. ONE: We can overcome every trial. TWO: Paul's Thorn in the Flesh THREE: Ephesians 3:20
Scriptures are quoted from the New Living Translation, unless otherwise noted.
ONE: We have been given everything we need to overcome every trial. Although we live in a fallen world where we will have many trials and tribulations (John 16:33). I beleive God equiped us with everything we need to overcome those trials. I believe that is precisely what Jesus was telling in the back half of John 16:33 "...be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." The world is a nasty place, but Jesus came to deliver us from it.
I think we can find proof of that in Galatians 1:4 (NLT) "Jesus gave his life for ous sins, just as God planned, in order to rescue us from this evil world we live in." The KJV says, "...present evil world."
1 John 5:4 (NLT) "For every child of God defeats this evil world, and we achieve victory through our faith."
I beleive we can achieve this victory in every area of their lives.
Galatians 3:12-14 (NLT) tells us, "This way of faith is very different from the way of the law, which says, 'It is through obeying the law that a person has life.' (13) But Christ has rescued us from the curse pronounced by the law. When he hung on the cross he took upon himself the curse for our wrongdoing. For it is written in the Scriptures, 'Cursed is everyone who hung on a tree.' (14) Through Christ Jesus God has blessed the Gentiles with the same blessing he promised Abraham, so that we who are believers might receive the promised Holy Spirit through fiath."
So we are redeemed from the curses given in Deuteronomy 28:16-68 through the law, and instead we have been given the blessings of Abraham, which includes the promised Holy Spirit.
What happened when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the earth in Acts chapter 2 on the day of Pentecost? Jesus explained what would happen even before He sent Him. He said in Acts 1:8 (NLT) "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you..."
Acts 2:22 tells us, "...God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs..." How did Jesus perform miracles? Acts 10:38 tells us, "And you know that God annointed Jesus of Nazarath with the Holy Spirit and with power. Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, for God was with him."
What did the diciples do with the power they were given through the Holy Spirit? Acts 5:12 (NLT) says, "The apostles were performing many miraculous signs and wonders among the people..." Verse 15 says, "As a result of the apostle's work, sick people were brought out into the streets on beds and mats so that Peter's shadow might fall across some of them as he went by."
Acts 19:11-12 "God gave Paul the power to perform unusual miracles. (12) When handkerchiefs or aprons that had merely touched his skin were placed on sick people, they were healed of their diseases, and evil spirits were expelled."
Who is the Holy Spirit for? Acts 2:32-34 (NLT) "God raised Jesus from the dead and we are all witnesses of this. (33) Now he is exalted to the place of highest honor in heaven, at God's right hand. And the Father, as he had promised, gave us the Holy Spirit to pour out upon us, just as you see today." Drop down to verse 38-39 "Peter replied, 'Each of you must repent... be baptized...then you will be recieve the gift of the Holy Spirit.' (39) This promise is to you and to your children, and even to the Gentiles--all who have been called by the Lord our God." Acts 5:32 also says, "...the Holy Spirit, who is given by God to those that obey him."
I believe we have access to the Holy Spirit and His power today. There is no where in the Bible that teaches that the Holy Spirit's power or the miracles performed by Him through people ended with the apostles.
In fact when Jesus gave the great commission in Mark 16:15-18 he said in verse 17-18 "These miraculous signs will accompany those that believe. They will cast out demons in my name, and they will speak in new languages. (18) They will be able to handle snakes with safetly, and if they drink anything poinsonous, it won't hurt them. They will be able to place their hands on the sick, and they will be healed."
James 5:14-15, "Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in in the name of the Lord. (15) Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven."
Anyway, this group was created to teach others how to overcome trials and tribulations (mainly sickness) and I just wanted the newcomers to have an understanding of what this group is about. Thanks for listening!
THE SECOND thing I want to share is a conversation I was having with someone about Paul's thorn in the flesh, and I also post it in my group for others to read.

2 Corinthians 12:7 (KJV) "And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of revelation, there was given me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I become exalted above measure." The KJV uses the word "buffet," in the NLT is says, "torment."
What is a "thorn in the flesh?" Many teach and preach that it means sickness, but when "thorns" are mentions in the Old Testament, what did it mean? Let's look at 3 passages:
Numbers 33:55 “But if you fail to drive out the people who live in the land, those who remain will be like splinters in your eyes or THORNS IN YOUR SIDES. They will harass you in the land where you live.”
Joshua 23:12-13, “But if you turn away from him and cling to the customs of the survivors of these nations remaining among you, and you intermarry with them, (13) then know for certain that the LORD your God will no longer drive them out of your land. Instead, they will be a snare and a trap to you, a whip for your backs and THORNY brambles for your eyes…”
Judges 2:2-3 “For your part, you were not to make any covenants with the people living in the land: instead you were to destroy their altars. But you disobeyed my command. Why did you do this? (3) So now I declare that I will no longer drive out the people living in your land. They will be THORNS IN YOUR SIDES and their gods will be a constant temptation for you.”
In each of these instances “thorns” were talking about people harassing the Israelites. It was not talking about physical sickness.
In 2 Corinthians 12:7 (NLT), it says, “I was given a thorn in the flesh A MESSENGER FROM SATAN to torment me…”
In verse 10 Paul describes how he was tormented by the messenger from Satan. 2 Corinthians 12:10 “That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the INSULTS, HARDSHIPS, PERSECUTIONS, and TROUBLES that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
Let’s take a look at the hardships, insults, and persecutions Paul suffered:
2 Corinthians 11:24-33 (Just 7 verses before he describes all of this as “a thorn in the flesh):
“Five different times the Jewish leaders game me thirty-nine lashes. (25) Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked. Once I spent a whole day and night adrift at sea. (26) I have traveled on many long journeys. I have faced danger for rivers and from robbers. I have faced danger from my own people, the Jews, as well as from the Gentiles. I have faced danger in the cities, in deserts, and on the seas. And I have faced danger from men who claim to be believers but are not. (27) I have worked hard and long, enduring many sleepless nights. I have been hungry and thirsty an have gone without food. I have shivered in the cold, without enough clothing to keep me warm.”
(28) Then besides all this, I have daily burdens of my concern for the churches. (29) Who is weak without my feeling that weakness? Who is led astray, and I do not burn with anger? (30) If I must boast, I would rather boast about the things that show how weak I am. (31) God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, who is worthy of eternal praise knows I am not lying. (32) When I was in Damascus, the governor under King Aretas kept guards at the city gates to catch me. (33) I had to be lowered in a basket through the window in the city wall to escape from him.”
Then in 2 Corinthians 7:5 (Just 5 verses after Paul talks about all his hardships, trials, and persecutions) he tells us again, “…I will boast only about my weaknesses.”
Now let’s look at the next verse 2 Corinthians 7:6 “If I wanted to boast, I would be no fool in doing so, because I would be telling the truth, but I won’t do it because I don’t anyone to give me credit beyond what they can see in my life or hear in my message.”
So we can see here that Paul said he only wanted to boast about his weaknesses, and things that show how weak he was. Why, because he didn’t want any credit to be given to himself. His weaknesses showed that he had to depend on God. In verse 9 he says, “So I am glad to boast in my weaknesses , so that the power of Christ can work through me.”
Where in all of that does it say that his thorn was a sickness? Paul never mentions a sickness. He mentions all of his hardships, trials, persecutions, and weaknesses, but never a sickness. It was the same as the Old Testament verses we looked at, where they had:
Splinters in their eyes
Thorns in their sides
Thorny brambles in their eyes
And again: thorns in their sides
It’s a figure of speech meaning harassment, and Paul had all sorts of harassment from Satan, that’s why all those hardships listed were happening to him. Satan was trying to prevent him from spreading the Gospel message, and to prevent Paul from being exalted beyond measure, because if Paul was exalted and people listened to him, then then the Gospel would spread faster. Notice the KJV does not say Paul wanted to exalt himself, it says the thorn/messenger was given to keep him from being exalted. Many other translations say GOD gave the thorn to keep him from being prideful. Paul was humble, only wanting to boast about his weaknesses, God doesn't need to abase someone that is already humble. Anyway, Paul's "thorn in the flesh" was harassment from Satan, just as the "thorns" in the Old Testament were harassment from their enemies.
The THIRD thing I want to share with you is something I wrote to someone last night. I talks about Ephesian 3:20
Ephesians 3:20 says, "Now unto him [God] that is able to do abundantly and exceedingly above all we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us."
So God can do more than we could ever imagine, according to the power that works in us. What is the POWER that works in us?
I'll answer that question by quoting another scripture. Acts 10:38 "And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with POWER. Then Jesus went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him."
What does this verse say about where Jesus' power came from? It came from the anointing of the Holy Spirit.
Before Jesus ascended into to heaven after His resurrection, He talked with His disciples. He gave them instructions about what He wanted them to do. In Acts 1:8 Jesus said, "But you will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses...."
Jesus had told them previously that the Holy Spirit would come to the earth after He went away. He explained that He had to go away, or else the Holy Spirit couldn't come, but once He left, then the Holy Spirit would come. We can read about that in John chapter 16. I won't type out the whole chapter, but I will quote verse 7 where it says this, "But in fact, it is best for you that I go away, because if I don't, the Advocate [The Holy Spirit] won't come. If I do go away, then I will send him to you."
Let's go back to the verse I talked about earlier: Ephesians 3:20 says, "Now unto him [God] that is able to do abundantly and exceedingly above all we ask or think, according to the POWER that worketh in us."
So the power that works in us is the Holy Spirit. God poured out the Holy Spirit on the earth in Acts chapter 2. I will quote the first few verses of that chapter:
Acts 2:1-4 "On the day of Pentecost all the believers were meeting together in one place. (2) Suddenly, there was a sound from heaven like the roaring of a mighty windstorm, and it filled the house where they were sitting....(4) And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit."
I could go on and explain much more, but in the interest of keeping this semi-short, the point I am making is that we have the Holy Spirit inside of us, if we are born again believers, and it is through the power of the Holy Spirit living in us, that God is able to do exceedingly and abundantly all we ask or think.
We have to know how to release that power though. Jesus released the power by speaking to things and commanding them to happen. His disciples also did that same thing. He even told them in Mark 11:22-24 "Then Jesus said to the disciples, 'Have faith in God. (23) I tell you the truth, you can SAY to this mountain, 'May you be lifted up and thrown into the sea', and it will happen, but you must really believe it will happen, and have no doubt in your heart. (24) I tell you, you pray for anything, and if you believe that you received it, it will be yours."
Back in those days, they called problems "mountains" so Jesus was not talking about a literal mountain here, he was saying speak to your problem, and tell it what to do, and if you believe in your heart and have no doubt, and you believe right then and there that you will receive it, then it will be yours. He called "speaking to the mountain" praying. That's how you release the power of the Holy Spirit inside of you, by speaking. It may sound crazy, but that's what Jesus did, He said, "Lazarus come forth" and raised him from the dead, He said "Be still" and calmed the storm. In Acts chapter 3:6 Peter spoke to the man that was crippled from birth and said, "....In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk." and the man did and he was healed.
I speak to my body and tell it to heal. I have a whole list of confessions that I speak over myself every day. I will just share a few with you, just so you will know what I am talking about:
1. Body, I speak the Word of Faith to you. I demand that every organ perform a perfect work, for you are the temple of the Holy Spirit; therefore, I charge you in the name of Jesus Christ and by the authority of His Holy Word to be healed and made whole in Jesus name. (Prov. 12:18.)
2. Father, I resist the enemy in every form that he comes against me--I require my body to be strong and healthy, and I enforce it with Your Word. I reject the curse, and I enforce life in this body. (James 4:7.)
3, I will not die but live and declare the works of the God. (Ps. 118:17)
I don't know if what I said makes sense to you or not, but my whole point is that I believe we overcome things through releasing the power of the Holy Spirit that lives on the inside of us, and not by our own efforts.
I will just leave you with 4 short verses:
Romans 8:37 "...we are more than conquerors through him that loved us."
1 John 4:4 "Ye are of God little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."
1 John 5:4 "For whoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith."
Revelation 12: 11 "And they overcame him by the the blood of the lamb, and by the word of their testimony...."
ONE: We have been given everything we need to overcome every trial. Although we live in a fallen world where we will have many trials and tribulations (John 16:33).
