Legalistic religion often teaches us that when bad things happen to us, God wanted it or allowed it to teach us a lesson. If we face failure or sickness, our thinking might be, “God has a purpose for it.” 

We have to remember that God is a good God who loves us and has only good plans for us (Jeremiah 29:11). Besides, what possible purpose could God have for young women being kidnapped and raped? What could He possibly need to teach a three-year-old screaming in pain in the cancer ward?

In 2 Kings 6, an enemy king wanted the prophet Elijah dead. When he found out where Elijah was, he surrounded the city with a huge military presence overnight. At dawn, Elijah’s servant saw the troops and was petrified, but not Elijah! He prayed for God to open his servant’s eyes, and the servant suddenly saw the reality of the spiritual realm. The hillsides were filled with warring angels and chariots of fire, all for Elijah. 

You see, Elijah was fully confident in something that rule-based, religious thinking completely misses: God is on our side. He’s not on the other side coming against you with sickness or misery to teach you a lesson. As a believer, you are in right standing with God because of what Jesus did through the cross and resurrection. You are fully qualified. The risen Lord Jesus has secured God’s help and provision for every believer. Imagine that!

Keep your eyes open to the reality that God is with you and for you in every area of your life. His presence and power are yours every day!


MY COMMENTS:  This passage shows us that there is spritual warfare that goes on that we can't see.  2 Kings 6:16 was pointing out that there were more angels fighitng than there were demons.  But that is not always the case.  In the book of Daniel (Daniel 10:12-14), when Daniel prayed it took 21 days for his prayer to be answsered.  It was later explained to him that God sent the angel to answer his prayer the second he prayed, but the angel had to fight through the demons in the atmosphere to get to him, and that took him 21 days.  The archangel Michael finally had to come and help in the fight.  So there are not always more angels than demons, and sometimes the demons can delay God's answers.  God is fighting on our behalf, but the point is, there is a fight, and not everything that happens on this earth is  a part of God's plan.  God didn't put the demons in the way to delay the angel from ansewring Daniel.  That was not a part of His plan.  So things do happenhere that God doesn't put His stamp of approval on.

As believers, we’ve been promised so much. Jesus’s death and resurrection restored us back to God and gained us a heavenly home, but there’s even more good news! We’ve also gained a heavenly army here on earth to back us!

In 2 Kings 6, a servant discovered this reality firsthand. When Elijah’s servant’s eyes were opened to see beyond the physical realm to the spiritual, he saw that Elijah was not alone in his battle against the enemy. In fact, it was the opposite. Surrounding them was a vast army of warring angels, prepared for battle against Elijah’s enemy!

We need to remember that this same heavenly army encamps around us too, just as military troops are stationed to protect something of great importance. When you accept what Jesus did for you, you become instantly and fully qualified to receive all that God has promised you. As a believer, it’s your right and privilege to access that power and provision.

You need to believe, speak and envision the promises of God, because His healing power, peace, protection, joy, favour and all-consuming love for you is encamped around you at all times.

When it seems like everything is hopeless or that nothing’s going to work, remember what Elijah’s servant learned. When you’re in God’s family, you are never alone! All of heaven is ready to battle for you; angels have been commanded to watch over you.

Know that you are qualified because Jesus won it for you, and with that victory comes the backing of a heavenly army that does not know defeat!
