Okay, this might be a silly question, but I am hoping that you guys can help me out here.
If a Christian prays for the devil to leave a lost person alone, does Satan have to listen, or can he continue to torment them because they are unsaved? I know that in Christ I have authority over satan and his demons, but someone unsaved is not "protected" like I am, so do I still have the authority in that situation or not?
I have been praying for my lost friend for a while now. He is very depressed and has attempted suicide several times. I want my prayers to be as effective as possible!! If I can tell satan to leave him alone, I want to be able to do it with confidence! If I can't, I want to put my energy into the things I know I can pray for him for.
So.. Is it within my authority to tell satan he can't lie to my friend anymore? Or that he has to back off from oppressing him?

That being said, we can pray for their salvation and their protection. There is no magic formula of prayer. But God does understand our hopes and the people we care for. I think intercessory prayer is so important and just keep knocking at the throne.
On a practical level, mental illness can be caused by the chemicals in the brain not working properly. Make sure your friend sees a psychiatrist because maybe all he needs is some medication. And I will also pray for your friend.
