Religion of Intellect v. Religion of the Spirit

At this critical juncture in church history, the real conflict is between those who hold to an objective Christianity capable of being grasped in its entirety by the human intellect and those who believe that there are far-in areas of religious experience so highly spiritual, so removed from and exalted above mere reason, that it takes a special anointing of the Holy Spirit to make them understood by the human heart.

The difference is not academic merely. Should the advocates of religious intellectualism succeed in setting the direction for the church in this generation, the next generation of Christians will become helpless victims of orthodoxy.

I disagree with Tozer. I think we need both. Jesus told us to be "wise as serpents." To be truly wise, we need to have God's Word hidden in our hearts. We have to know his expectations. Because without the foundation of the Word, it is too easy to be led astray.

Of course, if that knowledge of the Word is not enlightened or illuminated by the Spirit, it does mean that the Word is in vain. But the Word does give the Spirit led person boundaries and guidelines for life, and for transformation. That is how we can be sure that it is truly the Spirit leading.

Because the Spirit will never lead us where the Bible tells us not to go. But without the Spirit, all the Bible reading and memorization in the world, will never give us a deeper relationship with Christ.
