I love this account about Jesus in Mark:

2:15-17
While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house, many tax collectors and "sinners" were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the "sinners" and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: "Why does he eat with tax collectors and 'sinners'?" On hearing this, Jesus said, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners."

This touches my heart. It serves as a great reminder that Jesus didn't discriminate among anyone. He would answer to anyone who called to him. It also gives us a good idea of how we should treat those who the Pharisees would've chastised today, i.e. non-believers, sinners etc.

Jesus's love is so beautiful.

It's the unconditional nature of His love that is so very appealing. He loves you, period. Then He tries to bring you up higher, to be more and more like Him. : ) Thanks for the topic!

This is one of my favorites too. The sad thing is, people don't realize that Jesus came for those who are broken and hurting not the righteous. I don't even know many broken people in real life. No, I know a few, but they pretend to be ok.

I think this is one the most important verses in Scripture with regards to who Jesus came for and who the church is. The church is not Sunday morning all dressed up and everyone with lots of money and healthy. The church is the body of Christ, broken for us. It is going into the streets and byways, and reaching those who are rejected by others. Thanks for this post.

Gosh, I think more people are broken than not. Maybe all of us are broken this is why I have trouble with self-righteousness. The sad part and maybe the irony is most of the broken people think they are whole. Angela if this doesn't make sense forgive me, I am trying to stay awake so I can go to bed at a decent hour. You know what else is ironic? This is a generalization and as a rule gneralizations are bad, but I break rules now and then. If one wants to meet nice people and feel loved attend an AA meeting. I know of people who go who are not alcoholics but crave the honesty and kindness these "broken" people have to give!!

Lisa, I've been a member in 12 step meetings for many years. Can't attend right now. What is impressive is that those people come in pretty much knowing they are broken, and they are willing to be humbled in order to get help. They were more real and more sincere then most of the people I would meet in church, because they had hit bottom and were willing to listen, learn, and most importantly, do.

I've often thought it would be helpful if churches also taught the 12 steps, which are based from the Bible. So many priests and ministers tell you what not to do, but they don't tell you where to get the strength to stop doing it! If you have an addiction, you need more than just "want to". Much to be learned at 12-step meetings.
