I love the message flowerbug wrote about traveling with her husband and having uninterrupted time with your spouse. My DH and I enjoy road trips so much, even if they are only a couple hours to our destination.

We are thinking of a road trip in February, touring southeast. We have never been to Charleston, SC, Savannah, GA, St. Augustine, FL and then heading west ending in Texas. Does anyone have any suggestions - places that are "must see", economic but nice places to stay, restaurants, etc.?

Norse, it's been a long time since I've been to St Augustine.
But I've been three times.
Oh it's AWESOME!
You must take a historical tour.
If you love history in a beautiful setting this IS the place to be!
Sorry, I don't remember restaurants or hotels.
But the bakery in old St Augustine is a must!

I have been to Maine - one year we took the boys on a 2-week trip visiting WIlliamsburg, DC, Gettysburg, NY and on up to an artist town on the ocean (can't remember the name). I had the best seafood I have ever had! OMG - I was introduced to a lobster roll at McDonalds. Here in the Midwest everything is about beef and pork, which I am not a fan of. Lucky you!

Go on Trip Advisor and put in the places you want to go to. You can get a list of all the tourist spots, hotels, resturants and people's reviews. It's how I plan my trips.

I live in North GA. Savannah is one of the most beautiful places you will ever visit. It is a walking town so I would advise to stay close in if possible. There are many bed and breakfasts there also. Charleston is a pretty southern town. I was there last summer for the first time and took the tour of seeing the old town. However, Savannah and St Augustine are my favorites of the three. You will also be able to visit St. Simons along that tour. Totally a lovely place. Feb. is a great time to go there. Spring will be kicking in and the azaleas are beautiful. Enjoy!

My husband and I were stationed in Atlanta Ga many years ago. We didn't make it to Savannah but depending on time of year, everything there is beautiful. I remember the dogwoods blooming in spring, going north to Helen GA. What a beautiful area.

Im trying to remember the town we went to that had moved an entire plantation onto one area. Complete with slave quarters. Was a moving experience.

wearyofitall - how many days would you suggest we plan for each of the cities? We love civil war stuff so are looking at the Atabelum (sp?) Trail for part of it. Any cities in GA you would suggest we not miss, other than Savannah of course.

Norske if you visit Savannah be sure and go to Tybee Island. They are known for their Turtle Trot. Loggerhead turtles lay eggs on their beaches and when they hatch they parade into the ocean. Amazing.
