When I find myself troubled by how things are today, by the little day to day things that go wrong, by the hurts and disappointments I may be feeling now, by the injustices I see in the present, by the wrongs I look back on in my past, by the state of my relationship with an estranged child when I wish it were better and more, I can become focused on it so much that it blocks me from seeing the good things around me. I can become transfixed by the flickering light of worry and doubt and forget that tomorrow lies ahead full of possibilities. I can become overcome by the darkness of all that has happened in my life that wasn't good and it can snuff out the light of hope that is trying to come through.
Today, if I look at my estranged adult child, my eyes can be clouded by the flaws that are there, but if I look more closely and with objective eyes, I can see subtle changes that are happening in my adult child, changes that are molding my adult child and shaping him in ways that I never imaged could happen.
When I'm disappointed with how it is now or hurt when things aren't going the way I'd hoped or arent' changing fast enough, I pray that God helps me to see beyond what human eyes are capable of. Not that I will see illusions or live in denial with rose-colored glasses, but that God will give me the eyes of faith and I will see what God sees - the bigger picture.
