I'll look up this book. This is the conclusion I've finally come to…that we need to move forward with our own lives apart from our children--difficult as that is. The devil may be having a heyday in the lives of our children, but that doesn't mean we need to give him permission to also destroy our lives as well.

CanadianMother, I agree. I actually think it is good that our estranged children know that we are going on with our lives. We love them and want the very best for them, but they are not the center of our universe. Sometimes I wonder if it might make them ponder their choices when they know we can have a life apart from them. They cannot manipulate us further when we don't engage with them.

Hope you like the book. It has been a big help to me.

I haven't been on this site for a long time because I cannot usually stand to read all of the painful stories but today I am here and wishing so much to be rid of the sorrow and heartache we have over our ED..................I will look up the book but I don't see how I am ever going to get on with my life. I keep hearing in my head what a FAILURE I AM. You know, I believe that we have to understand that our kids have their view of whatever mistakes we made as parents and even if it is a distorted view - it is still their view. Their reality-ugh.
I want sooooooooo much to be able to see my grandson-he was born a yr ago June 29th. I have never met him................my pain is so deep, so unbearable today-I wish God would take me home. Life is too hard.

tkmalin, I'm sorry for your pain. We here can all relate. With much prayer it is possible to get on with our lives. I spent a year crying pretty much all weekend every weekend, then my husband told me I had been in mourning for a year and it was time to be happy again… and he was so right! It took more time, but now I can say that I have joy again. I'm making new friends who know about the estrangement, I'm going to a counsellor, I'm doing public speaking again, and just living life on my own terms again.

In our own strength we cannot do this. We are mothers (and maybe some fathers are here).

I sense your desperation. Read the Psalms, ask God to give you comfort and strength. Get outside and enjoy God's creation. Do whatever brings you joy, and do it often.
