Been thinking about asking for something in return. Often, I feel like I am responsible for doing everything on my own. For making everyone else comfortable, happy, well, etc. I never ask for anything in return. So maybe this holiday I will.
Maybe I'll ask something of my sister, who is choosing to retire with her husband in a different state and leaving me to take care of my elderly father alone just months after the passing of my dear mother.
Maybe I'll ask something of my EC, who is choosing to estrange himself from his family and use alcohol and drugs.
Just asking won't guarantee that I will get what I ask for, but for me, I think the asking is the important part.
My sister plans to bring her husband to my place for Thanksgiving. I don't mean to judge, but her husband is a very selfish and controlling person and whenever we make plans, he is never prompt and then he overstays his welcome or leaves my sister behind at our home while he romps around until whatever time he chooses to pick her up. So I'm going to ask her to come before dinner is served and to help me set up my place. I'm going to ask her to be on time and let her know what time the Thanksgiving get together will end. I'm going to ask her to help me clean up too.
I will probably extend an invitation for Thanksgiving to my EC as I've always done, but this time I'm going to as my EC to confirm a week ahead of time and let my EC know that I would like him to arrive before dinner to help withthe preparations.

Plan B With my sister/brother-in-law:
-If they fail to show up on time to help out, I will begin eating dinner with my dad and leave them leftovers. When I serve them the leeftovers, I will ask them to warm it up and let them now that I'm disappointed that they didn't follow through on helping me with prepartions. I will also ask them to take care of the clean up after they eat and then call it an early night.
Plan B With my EC:
-If my EC fails to respond to my invitation, I will go forward with my plans and enjoy them. I will not call my EC for thanksgiving, having already invited him is enough.
-If my EC shows up without confirming, I hope there is food left over, but I will not save any.
