I don't know about the yelling. I'm not used to it, but maybe that would be a great wakeup call! I definitely think stating the truth in a firm yet loving way is the only way I can handle it. However, my husband and I did that, putting it in very clear language, and we haven't heard from our son or his family since. So there you go. Who knows?? I do feel better just knowing that we spoke the truth in love, and we set a boundary for what we are willing to listen to. We had heard enough untruths. Pussyfooting around the situation, walking on eggshells, whatever you want to call it - didn't work. We are praying that God uses those words of truth to strike a chord at some point.
Drunk calling isn't the worst your adult child can do to you. Our family member lost an adult child to suicide. That's the worst. As long as there's life there's hope. God answers prayer.

I think your DH is angry at what your son is not only doing to you and him and your marriage but also what he is doing to himself. Your son may not have been as sensitive to the yelling as us mom's are. Just do not blame
yourself. Your son will mature. Pray for him and direct him to help.

I think you DH did the right thing, except maybe yelling, but it is time all of these kids grew up and took responsibility. We mothers tend to baby our sons and give in to their wants, only to have them treat us terrible. Your DH was practicing "tough love". Sometimes they need to get to the bottom before they will lean on God and work their way out of the pit.

It sounds like a very typical man's reaction to me. Probably your sons are used to the different way you talk to them as opposed to their father. Men tend to see things in very black and white, and also to be more prone to believing that if you just do " such and such " your problem will be solved. Whereas women can often see all the shades of gray, and that there can be many complexities to a problem, and that easy fixes are few and far between. At least, that has been my experience. But I think often in traditional families, women are more nurturing, and men are more sort of cut and dried. And I do share some of what might have been your husband's frustration, like I have an idea of what being an adult means, that came out of my own experiences growing up, and my children, and my friends' children seem to have very different ideas of what it means to be an adult. For my own ES, I have theorized that he believes being a grown-up means not ever having to do what your mother tells you to do. Which he has taken to an absurd and hurtful level. But I think that often, conflicts can be traced to people having different definitions of the meaning of things. At any rate, I imagine your son might have heard similar kinds of words from your husband before. And I don't know that there is any one perfect way to respond to an adult child who calls you while drunk. Your son may not even remember what you or his Dad said to him. It is very clear and obvious that you care deeply about your son, and truly believe that came through to him.

Thank you all. I know drunken phone calls aren't the worst thing that could happen. It's what he SAYS during those conversations that distress me. He hates himself, hates life, there is no God, no heaven, he will never amount to anything (which he definitely didn't hear from us), etc. There have been 3 times he had to go the "drunk tank" in Lincoln, losing his pickup, 2 accidents, not to mention all the financial help weve had to give him to get his pickup fixed. Maybe we shouldn't have given him money to get it fixed, but he had a job he had to get to. We are probably making all kinds of mistakes, but were doing the best we can. Even I got frustrated during that last call. Ive had enough. I haven't yelled at him in 5 years, I cant take yelling myself, being yelled at, or even hearing it. I have become like that in the last few years, I just cant tolerate yelling. Maybe what his dad said will give him food for thought. I tell him all the time that I pray for him whether he believes in God or not.
